[/b] No one was there. Stunned, Hadley’s mouth fell open slightly. She could have sworn that she had felt someone else there with her and yet, no one was anywhere close. Shaking her head, Hadley turned back around and continued to observe the tree that was in front of her, looking for any more signs that someone had been here.
The night hours were quiet around the Forbidden Forest. It was well past midnight and most of the students that had snuck out for the night were already making their way back to the castle to catch some much needed shut-eye. ’Ah the touch of sweet cupid’s arrow could do such wonders for younger lovers’, she thought with extremist cynicism. Little did they know that love was a lie; that all people would betray one another in love if they had a chance. She caught glimpse of a couple passing a few yards to her left and pressed her thin frame against one of the trees in the forest, barely breathing. The couple moved sluggishly against the gradient of the trees, giggling to one another and whispering against the wind. Hadley Greer assumed that they could only take so much midnight snogging and whisperings of sweet nothings before they were inclined to bash their brains out themselves. She bit down on her lip as she felt her lips twitch slightly in an upwards motion; or perhaps it was just her that thought that romance and love wasn’t worth her time. When she was convinced that the couple had made it out of her radius of detection, she pushed her body off of the tree and began walking in the same direction: A woman on a mission.
Only the soft coo of owls could be heard from a distance and the occasional snap of a twig underneath Hadley’s soft padding feet. She stopped after about three minutes and made a sharp turn right, desperately searching for something...anything that would be a clue. She wanted to know what Zeke Maxwell was doing sneaking out here all the time. And if he wasn’t going to come clean and tell her himself, then she was going to do her best to discover what it was. Once that idea had been planted in her head, there was no going back. She had to know what it was he was planning and where he was planning on executing it.
She crossed into some sort of cleaning in the forest; a tiny area where the trees parted ways and the greenery was lit up by the stars above. Immediately distracted by the very things that seemed to keep her life-blood flowing, Hadley looked up and felt a genuine smile flutter across her lips. The stars were so beautiful tonight; all of them were shining brightly against the dark sky and there was not a cloud to be seen for miles. If only everyone had the appreciation that she did for the celestial bodies. Perhaps then they would learn what true beauty was.
For a brief moment, Hadley’s eyes closed and she stood there absorbing the moon-light, until she hear a snap of a twig.
Her eyes snapped open in protest, her mind immediately running off in a thousand different directions. Merlin, there was someone behind her. She could practically feel the presence of the other person in the clearing and she cursed herself for being so careless. This is how accidents happened - Hadley warned herself to be more careful in the future before slowly turning around, ”You should-”
