"Alice?... Alice?"
Snapping to Alice looked up at the woman seated across the table. A therapist. One of the very few in their world. Mr. Hallows was paying her good money to "fix" his daughter, and had been for a number of years now. She was working very hard to get Alice on stable feet. Of course Alice wasn't a lunatic or anything, she was just a troubled girl for her age and her parents had many concerns about her mental well being.
"I'm sorry??" Looking up from her tea Alice blinked a few times. Since she attended Hogwarts the woman had to meet her in Hogsmead ever two months. It used to be more frequently, but Alice was a little older now and the program had been working thus far, so it wasn't as necessary as it had been.
"We were talking about your upcoming interview. For the wizard Cup. You said something about a party? What else have you been up to lately?" The woman had wavy dark hair and large inviting eyes. Alice always felt she could talk to Mrs. Devereaux, but there were days lately where Alice was feeling alienated completely. Her therapist thought it was a side effect to being so alone as a child and having too many imaginary friends, and not enough real ones. Alice didn't know how to handle certain high stress social situations.
Taking a second to think Alice shrugged, "Not a whole lot. I didn't even go to that party. I stayed in. With a friend." Her voice started to fade out once more.
Clearly afraid she might loose the poor girl again Mrs. Deveraux stepped right in. "Alice. Where do you go? When you trail off like that. Where does your mind go?" The therapist knew lots of dark lost things that Alice had chosen not to remember. The incident in the ally, her night with Joram, every bad grade, every night mare, and even the good things. Noting the mist that came to Alice's eyes at the mention of her spacing out, Mrs. Devereaux moved on "Alice... Why do you think you put your name in that cup?"
"Because I can win. Because I have to win. To show them all." She blinked a long time before sipping her tea slowly again and looking up at the woman. Of course she had a different answer for why Alice did the things she did. "You know your friend Marly entered too right? Why not let her have this?"
It took a long time for Alice to answer that question, and it was very obvious that she didn't feel like having her brain picked that day. "I don't want her to get hurt. But we agreed to have each other's back." The therapist smiled a big pleased smile at this as though she herself had made some sort of an accomplishment in Alice's friendship. "The sense of comradery I get when we talk about Marlene makes me very happy for you, Alice. It's good to have such strong friendships in your position."
This struck something in Alice and made her look up at the woman from her sleepy trance, "I'm sorry... What position is that? Am I still nuts these days or am I just a pay check for you now?" The quiet subtle outburst was far from normal and the therapist frowned looking at her. "Alice... Are you having the nightmares again?"
There was another very long stretch of silence before Alice ran her finger through her empty tea cup to erase the leaves before the other woman could read them. "I have to be somewhere." She set the cup upside down on the saucer and slung her bag over her shoulder. Today was not the day to be bothered over therapy. This was stupid. "I'll be back next month then Alice. We should do this more frequently if you're having problems again." Of course, Alice ignored the woman calling after her as she let the door to Madam Puddifoot's slam shut.
The walk back to the castle was calming at least. She had to be in better spirits by the time she got there. People would start asking questions. And Alice honestly did not want to explain herself more than she had to. Telling Marly every secret was one thing, but not everyone needed to know her business. Alright so if Kasch asked then Alice wouldn't have kept it from him. He was sweet and very kind to her. Growing closer now she felt he deserved answers when he asked for them. Okay, so Marly and Kasch could know. But that was it.
Stalking up onto the lawns Alice ran a hand over her brow and looked around for the beautiful blond that she called her best friend. It was almost 3pm. Alice had promised to be there at exactly 3, and was never late. It was a good thing she'd ditched Mrs. Devereaux when she did. Not seeing her friend, Alice set her bag down on the ground and slumped into the quiet grassy patch beside it. The spare few moments she had were not wasted dwelling on nightmares or conditions, but rather trying to imagine the look on Kasch's face if she won the wizard cup.
