[/b] She looked down at the name tag that was in front of her, ”Nancy. I’m here to see Mr. Maxwell.”[/b]
Astrid Selwyn-Maxwell was quite the dutiful wife when she needed to be. She would quite frankly do anything for her husband if he said the word. Today was one of the rare occasions that he had actually asked her to do something. Earlier that morning she had received an owl that asked for her to bring the stack of papers that he had left sitting on the marble counter-top in the bar to the Ministry so that he could have his paperwork for the meeting that he was due to have at one o’clock this afternoon. She was more than happy to run them up to Val, after all, he was but a floo-network trip away, something that she would always have time for when it came to her husband.
Stepping out onto the floor of the ministry, she couldn’t help but feel as if she stuck out like a sore thumb. She had opted to wear one of the dresses that her husband had bought her the other week, but it was very form fitting and stiff - something that she hardly liked to tolerate. There were heels to accompany the dress but she had opted out of those in lieu of a pair of brightly colored flats. There were only some things that she was willing to sacrifice for her husband’s view of social normalcy. No, Astrid would much rather find herself in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, spending her day in the kitchen whipping up desserts of all kinds.
Hiss office was an easy find; fifth floor, end of the hallway. It was a straight shot if she was paying attention, which thankfully she was. She approached the woman that was sitting in front of the door at a desk and raised her eyebrows, ”Good morning-”
”May I ask who you are?”[/b] The woman’s tone was a little territorial and Astrid raised both of her eyebrows.
”His wife.”[/b]
”Oh! Merlin, Mrs. Maxwell. I didn’t even recognize you. Is that a new dress?”[/b] The woman was cleverly back-tracking but Astrid didn’t want to see her flounder around like a fish. Instead she offered the woman a warm smile, trying to calm her nerves, ”Mr. Maxwell is actually out on a lunch with some of the men from upstairs. Was there something that I could help you with? Would you like to stay until he returns?”[/b]
”No, heavens no. Will you make sure that this gets to him, however.”[/b] She handed the woman the papers that were tucked under her arm and gave her a nod, ”That’ll be all.”[/b] Astrid turned away and began walking in the opposite direction
”Have a lovely afternoon, Astrid!”[/b] The woman called out as she walked away.
Completely satisfied with herself, Astrid was convinced that it was all in a days work, ”Mission accomplished-”[/b] She said, exuberantly proud of herself.
”What was that, Mrs. Maxwell?”[/b] The secretary that was in front of her husband’s office asked, looking at the woman with a very confused expression.
Astrid, almost immediately a little embarrassed turned around and offered the woman a smile, ”Nothing. Tell Mr. Maxwell to have a lovely afternoon, won’t you?”[/b] She requested, putting on her best Maxwell Matriarch smile. With that, she turned away and continued walking down the hallway toward where she thought the elevators were.
She pulled her sunglasses from the top of her head and slipped them onto her face, determined to look as if she actually belonged in the ministry. In the process she managed to slam smack-dab into someone that was standing in the middle of the hallway. Immediately her glasses fell to the ground and she bent down to pick them up. ‘Not exactly the right way to blend in, Astrid,’ Her mind scolded her as she finally found the sunglasses and shoved them into her right hand. She stood up and stared at the man that had been her...unconventional roadblock, ”Pardon me, Sir. I’m terribly sorry. I wasn’t watching where I was going.”[/b] There it was again, the odd tone that she picked up when she was around people that expected her to be of higher social status, ”I just-”[/b] She reached up to pick a hair off of the man’s outfit and then offered him as charming a smile as she could manage.
