What was she doing here? It was freezing and she knew it was passed time to go in. The only people who would be out on the grounds now where rule breakers and staff members. Alice was neither of them. Though she supposed that since she was here, she was a rule breaker. This thought came and went with little regard. Truth was Alice didn't care at that point. She was feeling rather sorry for herself and all together a little crummy. Kasch had tried so hard to cheer her up yesterday, and really it had made her feel better.

It was just that, Joram confronting her had stirred up a lot of old memories that didn't settle well with the girl at all. Some of them weren't even relevant to the scene. But never the less, they'd left Alice with a lot to think about. Why had she run from him? Was it really such a bad thing they had done? Was it all fear or was part of it more than that? Why Joram? Why her? Why had he chosen the ally that day? What happened? Who saved her? There were so many things the girl was trying to figure out that it made her head spin.

With a deep breath, Alice pulled the sweater around her shoulders a little tighter and looked down at her shoes. Her little toes were frozen now as her flats yielded little to no warmth what so ever. They were also a little muddy. Which was a shame, these were some of her favorite flats. No matter, she knew how to clean them up. She also knew how to throw a pretty mean cheering charm, if only that would work now. Alice felt too down and too cloudy to manage it.

There was much more she would ponder on for a while if she felt she had time, but as she glanced up at the sky and the darkening clouds, Alice knew it was time to head back to the castle. It was a long walk and half of her didn't even want to make it. She would just make a tent right here. A little camp for her to stay in for as long as she wanted. Yes. What a marvelous plan. Insane, but marvelous. As Alice leaned against a little tree not far from the shore, her ears perked and funneled in a rustling sound coming from up the carved out little path.

Her heart jumped a little. Maybe it was a bear! A bear? What kind of thought was that? Hogwarts didn't have bears. Did it? No surely not. But it had plenty of other things that could have come to eat her. It could have been a professor!!!! Oh she was doomed!! She'd be kicked out! Or something equally terrible. "I'm sorry!!!" She sprang from the tree and into the open path in the direction of the noise. "I lost track of time and I didn't mean to be out so long and I'm really sorry please don't expel me or...eat me." The face was too dark to see just beyond the bushes, not to mention Alice had her eyes clasped shut. She wasn't sure who it was, so expel... eat... She figured all her bases were covered.

Issac's heart raced as he hurried down the path towards the lake. He knew if he were to be caught he would be in serious trouble, but he had a backup plan. Issac never broke rules, it was against his very nature but tonight there was no helping it. A few minutes earlier Issac had pulled his nose from his homework with intentions on getting a good nights rest, however Joram Mortelle had other plans. The tie on the door to the boys dorms was the clue Issac should have heeded, but in his sleepy state he walked in on a scene of sweat and skin and smoke that he needed a long, cold walk to get out of his head. So, coming down to the lake in the dead of night seemed, at the time the best option to Issac seeing as how the library was closed at this time of night. Normally, Issac slept in the common room on nights like this, and on occasion the hall outside the entrance to the hufflepuff basement. Tonight though, he was livid. He had a test in the morning and Joram would be the death of him.

Coming around the corner, head filled with thoughts of cursing Joram, then later regretting it, something jumped from the side of the path, sending Issac back on his rear with a rather embarrassing yip of fear. "But I'm not even hungry!" The response was quick and more of a reflex than anything. Looking up from his sprawled position on the ground he could barely make out a figure on the path. "what, who?!"

The pink returned to her knuckles as her hands unclenched. Everything in her body had tightened and tensed in the seconds that had gone by. But at the sound of the boy's voice, Alice seemed to calm instantly. There was no immediate danger by the sounds of it and after all, he wasn't even hungry! Oh the luck of it all!! With a thought gathering moment, the Gryffindor girl slowly opened her eyes and looked straight. For a split second she was puzzled. Then her eyes hit the ground and found him.

His dark long hair and pale skin made Alice's heart leap into her chest so fast she thought she could vomit it right up. A second look cleared this regurgitative feeling. At first she'd thought him to be Joram himself but now she knew it not to be. "Why, you're not a bear at all." Obviously. The american accent rolling off his tongue suggested he was the Hufflepuff student who's name she couldn't place at that moment. "I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to scare you!" He wasn't a prefect was he? Oh no. Quickly she bent to grab hold of his hand and hoisted him (with a good amount of effort) back onto his feet. His clothes were now dirty and rumpled and it was all her fault. Alice made everything she touched worse and was beginning to think she actually was a terrible horrible person.

"Well, I don't think I'm a bear, not unless Joram did something to me again." Issac felt his face for traces of fur or a snout. "Thanks" he said, finding his feet again and brushing the dirt off his robes. For a moment, Issac was lost as to what to say or do in a situation like this. "Um, Issac, Issac Sterling." Shooting a hand out he could barely hide the crack in his voice as he spoke. Upon seeing who had scared him senseless, he could see she was beautiful. Suddenly his throat was tight and he was feeling a little nervous.

Issac was notoriously bad at dealing with anything he deemed beautiful. Women were an enigma to him, and the fact that one was standing here, in the dark and seclusion next to a moonlit lake was almost too much for him. "So, obvious question but, what brings you to the lake at a time like this?" He glanced around, the looming though still hanging in the back of his mind that he was going o be caught out here. A prefect of professor would pop out and deduct points, give detention or worse, write a letter home. The last thing he wanted was to let his parents down, they had given up so much to allow him to go to this school.

Joram's name rang an annoying and upsetting little bell in her head, but Alice didn't want that to come into the picture with someone who had nothing to do with her past. Her delicate hand brushed some grass from his shoulder. He was lucky to have slipped in a not so wet part of the shore or he might be covered in mud at this point. Her face lifted to look up at him and smiled, "I'm Alice. It's lovely to meet you." Issac's hands were a warm contrary to how chilled it was outside and Alice's were sure to be frozen but she slipped her own palm into his and gave it a customary little shake.

His next question wasn't as easy to ask. Her name had never changed so introductions were always the same "I'm Alice." sort of story. But what was Alice doing down here at a quarter passed 9 in the evening. Curfew had come and gone and here they were at the edge of the lake. "Uh....I'm...." Of all the times to be at a loss for words. "Needed air I suppose...You're not...a prefect or anything. Are you? I really would rather not be in trouble." The look on her round clear face was sheepish but instead of looking away in shame, the girl kept her big grey-ish blue eyes locked on his.

At the mention of prefects Issac looked over his shoulder. "No, nothing like that." Issac's eyes wandered over to the water and the soft lapping of the shore in the night breeze. It was peaceful out here and reminded him of nights at home. Being homesick was a constant for him, he missed his friends in the states and his parents. Her response told him she had her own reasons and he wasn't the kind of guy to pry.

"Air is good." The words felt awkward and hung along with his breath ion the night air. "Sorry, You have your reasons and that's cool." Looking back at the castle Issac decided it would be a good idea to move. "Walk with me?" His fear of capture took over his fear of women for the moment. She was very pretty he thought, moving towards the dark mass of water. "I've heard there's a giant squid in this lake. I've never seen him though. what about you?" mentally slapping himself he felt his face grow hot and was suddenly thankful it was dark out to hide his face.

"Only in my sleep." Her smile grew into an out right grin as she walked with him. Idly and more out of chill than anything, Alice's hand slipped into the crook of Issac's arm. Normally she wouldn't do that sort of thing with someone she didn't know, but Alice had a good feeling about him and didn't mind. Neither would she mind it if he happened to shy away. Half of her expected it. Either way it had happened and she was going to roll with it.

"I once had a dream the squid came out of the lake and knocked at my dormitory window begging for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It needed to be a very big sandwich of course. He is a giant after all. Then we went ice skating. But I've never seen him in real life." She supposed that was for the better. The real thing might poison her romanticized idea of the creature. Her version had adorable buggy eyes. "So... Why are you out so late? If you don't mind me asking in return." Her moon like face turned up to him and smiled softly, genuinely interested in him.

Issac tried not to choke as her arm wrapped in his. "I, well i guess you can say I was kicked out." taking a few more steps he kicked a small pebble, managing to get more dirt on his shoes than anything. "Joram Mortelle is the short version. He insists on bringing all manor of woman into our dorm at all manor of night. Tonight I couldn't even get in to get my things to sleep in the common room. sometimes he just makes me so mad."

Issac didn't know where all these words came from, but it was nice to have someone to talk to. most of the students around here ignored him, and out here, despite how pretty she was, it was rather easy to speak up. "I try ya know? i try and do good around here, but it never gets me anywhere. I spend most of my nights sleeping with the house elves rather than in my bed." All the pent up aggression over the last week or so was spilling out. he realised what he was doing and cut himself short.

"Sorry, I'm a little grumpy I guess. Lack of sleep I guess." He felt it was rude to put all this on someone he just met. Adding to the frustration from earlier, he now felt worse for spewing his troubles on this girl.

Alice did not find it at all surprising that he was opening up to her so effortlessly. She was very easy to talk to and was a magnificent listener. With a soft smile, she kept quiet as he let it all out and walked along with him, staring at their feet. Joram. Why did his name get brought up so damn much? It was beginning to be less of a guilty feeling and more of an annoyed feeling. At least for today it was. "I understand your problem with him entirely." Shaking her head, Alice gave a little sigh.

Feeling a little bad for him she tried to give him her best sympathetic smile and squeezed his arm just a little. "It's okay to be grumpy. I don't mind. I'm grumpy some times. And... I definitely understand how Joram's....ways.... can make one incredibly cranky." Thinking it over a little she chose not to divulge in her past with the boy. "I don't know what it's like to sleep with house elves but I've seen it happen." Looking down at the ground she chewed at the inside of her cheek for a bit. He needed a friend. Someone to look out for him. Someone who cared about him. "Why do you think you're not doing good or getting anywhere?"
