The castle walls were abuzz with the sounds of the students flocking toward the Great Hall. It was the beginning of the year, and everyone knew what that meant. They found their seats at their respective tables and sat, overwhelmed with excitement for what was about to happen.
One by one, the first year students filed into the Great Hall and found themselves in front of the Sorting Hat, waiting to be placed into the house that would be theirs for the next seven years. Each one stepped up to the stool and the hat was placed on their head. One after another they were sorted into one of the four houses; Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw. With each new member, the houses gave a cheer of triumph. Slaps on the shoulders were given in congratulations as the houses welcomed their newest additions.
When all had been sorted, Professor Dumbledore stood to his feet and raised his hands into the air, signaling for silence amongst his students. When they had settled and there was no more than a dull hum amongst them, he smiled brightly, ”Welcome!” He said in his loud booming voice. It seemed to fill every corner of the Great Hall despite its vast size, ”Welcome to another year at Hogwarts! I would like to take this opportunity to announce an introduction that is well overdue,” Dumbledore paused to let his words sink in with the student body. Everyone seemed to be on the edge of their seat - perhaps in wonder as to what Dumbledore was about to speak but probably more likely intoxicated with the idea of the feast that was to follow.
”I am pleased to welcome a new professor into our ranks this year. Professor Riddle-” Dumbledore gestured to the man that was seated at his right, ”Who has kindly filled the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher as well as Deputy Headmaster and Slytherin Head of House. I expect all of you to welcome him into our castle with an open mind.” He could heard the murmurs of students from across the room but decided to pay them no mind.
”I believe that is everything of importance this evening. Let the feast begin!” And on that note, the food appeared upon the house tables and the talking resumed its previous roar.
