“Love is the most selfish of all the passions.”
- Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers
There was a soft pattern to the way she walked back and forth; a gentle pat, pat, pat, pat as her shoes hit the floor. She'd been pacing for a while. Everyone had heard about the altercation by now, and James wasn't a genius at hiding his ass hole ways. If his best mate was even sore with him, Potter had messed something up pretty well. It took everything in her power not to seek Severus out the second she knew he was involved. Instead she worried entire afternoon and into the evening until her prefect duty started. Lily didn't even bother to check which halls were hers for the night, or to stop and scold the fourth years who were kissing beside a suit of armor. She had come straight to this room, as fast as she could and sighed seeing she was first to arrive.
Where was he? Was he alright? Was he hurt? James and Bellatrix were brilliant duelists. Her chest tightened with worry, thinking of him fighting them. The emerald green set of eyes that held every bit of what she was thinking, flicked up to the clock, watching the time like it was prey and she was a huntress. This wasn't doing anyone any good. She was going to worry herself sick. There had to be some sort of distraction in here. Homework. Lily could always do homework. After all, she had skipped out on over half her last potions class, and Slughorn was sure to be disappointed in her if she failed even one assignment.
Dragging out an empty cauldron from her bag, she placed it on the desk and leaned one her hands on the desk behind her. Sheets of ruby hair hung in her face as she hung her head. It was a good idea to do homework, but her head and her heart were working too hard against her to keep her focused. She tried her best to concentrate on the shrivelfig she was practically mutilating. Instead of skinning it, Lily had crushed half of it and diced the other before setting everything down again.
Just as she was giving up on the work, the door began to creek open. The sound brought her attention back and she snapped her head up to see who was there. The feeling in her chest was like drowning and being punched in the heart at the same time. "S-Severus??" Her quiet voice croaked out his name just as shadow of his tall stature stepped through the entry way.
