Effy was born to a muggle mother and a wizard father. Effy’s mother, Olivia Irvine, worked in a B&B owned by her family and met Effy’s father, Lewis Sparks, while he was staying there. He was working for the ministry and was staying there for a few nights. He was a brooding stranger and mesmerized Olivia. She tried to talk to him but he refused to lead her on. However, it was only because she was a muggle and he was brought up to not interact much with them. On his last night there Olivia had seemed to give up hope, but before his departure she came to him and demanded to know why he’d been so cold towards her. He finally admitted to having treated her coldly in order to keep her apart from him because of his secret lifestyle (being a wizard, although he didn’t tell her this right away) but that he too was attracted to her. They kissed.
For a while their relationship was a secret and Olivia played along with it. However, after three months she started to inquire why they couldn’t be tougher publicly and he finally told her his secret, that he was a wizard. She was shocked, of course, but he embraced this new lifestyle because she loved him and wanted to be with him. After a year they married and nine months later Elizabeth was born. Olivia became a stay-home mom and Lewis sought to their well being. Effy grew up in Iverness, Scotland surrounded by her mother’s family and friends. Her father’s relatives lived in London, where she often visited her uptight grandmother. Her father’s family had disapproved of the marriage to a muggle woman, but they still found it in their hearts to love Effy and her charming ways. When Effy was six she displayed that she too was magical when she made a jar of cookies float from the top shelf to her greedy hand.
Effy’s mother had always been an odd sort of woman. She was straight-forward and very emotional. As Effy grew older her mother grew more paranoid and fragile. She was always telling Effy to be careful and was constantly overprotective. Effy was a natural explorer and enjoyed life. She was curious and adventurous, yet sweetly charming and polite. However Effy’s mother was starting to become more of a nuisance than a pleasure, and although through the eyes of a child Effy’s mother seemed loving, Effy’s father was drifting away from the woman he’d once loved. He stared working more and more and coming home later and later until one day he had an affair with a woman he’d worked with that he’d gotten very close to. It was kept secret.
Effy started her education at Hogwarts and was sorted into Hufflepuff. She quickly made friends and some enemies, enjoying her school years. However, things were about to change. In Effy’s third year, Effy came home for Christmas and was told that her father had left her mother and that they were getting a divorce. It was quite unspoken of back then to get a divorce, and it was a huge shame. Effy cried and hated it all, but more than that the separation was making her mother unstable and she had a mental breakdown. At age thirteen, Effy watched as her mother cut her own wrists, trying to commit suicide. Luckily her mother received medical help in time, but she was never the same and had to be institutionalised. Effy blamed her father and his new girlfriend for her mother’s lack of health. Effy were to live with her father and his new girlfriend, which she hated and had resulted in Effy hating Christmas.
The affair her father had, had lead to Penelope (the “other woman”) to become pregnant and was partly why he’d left Effy’s mother. Penelope, or Lola, was from a halfblood family and was a more “suitable” match for Lewis than Olivia. The following summer Effy, age fourteen, got a baby brother.
