cause I've been gone so long,
I can barely say,
all I know is now I want to stay,
has it been too long since I went away?
It was both Gavin’s least favourite part of the week, but also the part of the week where he didn’t have much responsibility hanging on his shoulders. It was the day that he went down to the Daily Prophet with advertisements and articles written up by some journalists and secretaries in his office so that they could be printed throughout the next week’s newspapers. He wasn’t an editor by any means and it wasn’t his job, but he always read everything through before submitting them. He knew he could always send a secretary or assistant to bring it all in, but a part of him just wanted to have a simple task. Gavin was out of his office frequently, but most of the time it wasn’t just simple work. Finding locations for games, putting together tournaments, dealing with anti-Muggle charms, haggling with others about prices and salaries and just a lot of different things that always had his mind racing. He knew he could never do it all without the support of his Department, and he was eternally grateful. Gavin made a mental note as he absent-mindedly flipped through his papers to ask the accountants whether raises were something that they could afford. He had been seeing the same names on a few of the really good and well-written articles and advertisements for a while now and figured that they deserved a reward. He wanted nothing more than to be a fair and just boss. After his mini-scandal with dating his one secretary, that going south, and then her quitting, he now more than ever needed reasons to give his staff a reason to feel more than simply lukewarm toward him. He wasn’t willing to give promotions and raises to those who didn’t deserve it but he kept his eye out for any reason to. Naturally, they had to be bringing in enough money to the Ministry to be able to do so, but they had been busy for months now. Actually, they had been overwhelmingly busy since he started at the Ministry, so he assumed it wouldn’t be an issue.Gavin knew that an owl could send the documents to the Daily Prophet, too, but again, he liked to hand deliver it. Besides, spoken instructions and spoken answers to questions were easier than trying to scribble it all down on a piece of parchment. He only wanted certain advertisements to go in on certain days, and some of the articles he didn’t want in the same paper together. He never wanted to make the paper heavy with sports one day and then empty for the rest of the week. Gavin wasn’t always the tidiest of people, but he was meticulous on how he wanted his Department to be represented. The sun shone down on him warmly. The end of March was beginning to be kind to him after a week or so of heavy rain. There were puddles on the street, which Gavin side-stepped as he read through his papers. He didn’t want to only discover an error after it had been printed. He never Apparated right in front of the building. He liked his wizarding ability to essentially transport, but at the same time he knew that lack of walking might cause him to gain unwanted weight. So far, Gavin was able to keep his athletic body shape, but he wasn’t able to exercise as much as he would like with the Department’s needs constantly on his shoulders. He tried to get up early every morning to in the very least go on a run (with arm and leg weights), but sometimes he would get up early to do so only to find himself distracted by a file on his coffee table and end up going in to work early instead.Someone opened the door for Gavin as he walked up to the building. He smiled and nodded graciously before entering through. His eyes were on the papers before he remembered that summer was approaching. Students would still be in school for a few more months, but he knew it was time to put together the paperwork for summer interns. Not every Department had the same requirements, but Gavin had chosen to keep the old system of having a sixteen-year-old age minimum in place, and only during the summer holidays. Some had higher or younger age limits, and some allowed students to come in during other holidays. This would be Gavin’s first time bringing in interns, and the idea worried him. He hated interviews, although he knew that they could use the help particularly during summer which was by far their busiest time of year. Many interns would no doubt come back the next summer, or even after they graduated Hogwarts. It gave them a step-up having the internships because that meant that they had work experience and could be placed in higher-paying and better jobs. Those coming out of Hogwarts with no experience would be forced to do the internship then and it would take a while for them to work their way up.His eyes floated off the paper and up at something. He wasn’t really seeing anything, but instead his mind went to Eileen. Had he not promised her an internship for the summer? Did he not promise her the assistant’s desk in his office – would she come to take him up for his offer? The idea seemed both appealing and unappealing at the same time. He knew Eileen would do well but he felt uncomfortable because that meant that they would spend a lot of time together. The desk in his office was coveted by many regular employees, so having an intern there would be a great honour. He and Eileen would be spending most days together, especially since he’d be essentially training her. All other interns would be trained by the other staff members in the Department. He knew how he felt about Eileen, but his conversation with Ollivander had made him realize that perhaps yearning after her wasn’t the smartest thing in the world. Besides, the two of them had hardly even contacted each other lately. All he could think was that she was happy with Noah and therefore he escaped her mind. Deep down, it was what he wanted for her. They met at the very wrong time. Gavin himself wanted a fresh start. Dana had been promising, but they lacked chemistry when it came to their personalities. All he wanted was to be free of the guilt that hung around in his mind concerning his feelings toward this sixteen-year-old girl, and that’s all she was: a girl. She wasn’t a woman, and any thoughts regarding Eileen were improper. He was so incredibly distracted that he ended up ramming his shoulder into someone rather hard, causing his papers to go flying everywhere. He swore under his breath and went around collecting them. This was why he usually kept them in folders within his bag instead of reading them on the run. It had been a silly mistake and now he’d have to waste more time trying to make sure he had all the pages and put them back in proper order. Some of the articles were pages and pages long (the Prophet sometimes cut the length of them down depending on what was going on that day), and it wouldn’t be an easy task figuring out where everything went. The process of putting them back together could take hours. Gavin was so busy trying to collect his papers that he had neglected to even apologize to the person or see if they were hurt – he didn’t even know if that person was there. If Gavin had been an outsider and saw the exchange, he would have thought himself incredibly rude.tag: OPENwords: 1,300
