How Peculiar [Open]

The weather never particularly bothered Blair one way or another. She spent most of her time indoors unless her friends were particularly incessant in enjoying The Great Outdoors. What was so great about being outside anyway? Fresh air? Crack a window, it would do the trick just as well, and one wouldn’t have to worry about things like bugs or rain or dirt, or any of those other bothersome things. She learned long ago that voicing her displeasure about being outside was a good way to get her ostracized, even jokingly, so she kept it to herself. She was in Ravenclaw, for heaven’s sake, she would have assumed more of her kind weren’t really for the whole nature bit. 

Apparently it was one of those days outside that were marginally less cold than the day before, so many of her friends opted to study outside. Blair excused herself quickly, claiming that she needed to speak to some professor or another, before hiding away in a classroom near the front entrance. When she had gone in search of an empty space, she had felt the front doors open and she could feel the bitter wind. It was hardly warm enough to be out there. If this was autumn, everyone would be huddled indoors next to the fire. 

She could have escaped to the library, but it was always so busy in there. Instead, the unlocked classroom would serve well enough. She was just practising, anyway, considering her homework was already all completed as it always was. Blair was the type of girl who would get her homework done the night it was assigned. She got a thrill out it. She liked doing homework like the average person liked to play Quidditch or read books. What wasn’t better than filling one’s head with knowledge? It was probably why she found most people at Hogwarts beneath her. They all prioritised unimportant things like being good at sports or graceful social skills.

Blair took a marble out of her bag. They were practising duplicating things, and she shamed herself in admitting that she wasn’t the greatest at it. She sat on the floor with her back against the wall and her legs outstretched. She coughed dramatically into her hand before flourishing her wand. It wasn’t so much about duplicating as it was about duplicating it nonverbally. The first time she tried, nothing happened. The second time, she managed to shrink it in half. By the fifth she had another half-marble to go with her original one. By the time she actually duplicated it, she was immensely pleased with herself. The whole duplicating thing was still weeks ahead in their learning schedule, but she had begged for extra work, and the professor had humoured her with this task. 

The door was slightly ajar, and the floor uneven, so as she gleefully duplicated the marbles, they slid out the door and down the corridor. Blair hardly paid attention as she was so enveloped with what she was doing. “Fuck yeah!” she exclaimed, cheerily, every time a marble rolled away from her. “And I thought I couldn’t do it, always underestimating myself, I am,” she murmured to herself as three more marbles disappeared around the door.
