In an instant, she felt more his than he had ever imagined possible. Astrid hadn't pulled away, that had to be a good sign. Her body felt so small in his arms. Ezriel had been aware that a stay in Mungos had a certain affect on the body, still he'd always viewed her as a strong woman; not the kind that gave up on taking care of herself. But her eyes hard dark circles in them, her smile seemed tired. Her hair was often disheveled, and though he dismissed it, he had noticed her mildly out of place slippers. She had changed in the recent months. Not that he blamed her, just that he had imagined holding onto a woman who couldn't be broken. It seemed to him, she already was, and he was cradling the fragments of an Astrid of days gone by.

With her staring up at him, Ezriel's heart leaped in his chest. Where he'd felt so hollow before, he was now bursting at the seams. He found himself wishing he had more arms so that he could hold her tight to his body and stroke her cheek at the same time. Reaching up to her face, he brushed his thumb, dried from years of parchment shuffling, over her smooth jaw. He had to protect her. He had to take care of her.

"I love you." He'd said it so quickly he almost cut her off. Eager to get the words out at first, he could feel his throat tightening after speaking. The words he'd worked so hard to hide deep down in his soul had finally spilled from his lips. With a hard swallow, Ezriel reminded himself that he had nothing to fear from honesty. She had kissed him. She had told him her feelings first. The possibility of her rejecting him entirely was far away now.

He took in another breath and rekindled his courage. "I love... everything about you. And... It breaks my heart to see you in Mungos like that. It... It kills me thinking if I only told you how much I loved you, that maybe it would cure the crack in your smile. If I told you... maybe I could take care of you. Protect you. I just want... you. Nothing more."

i can’t let go of you

baby, i’ve fooled around and fell in love.

’I love you.’

Astrid felt her heart in that moment. One was not supposed to be aware of physical processes such as blood pumping through the body via the central heart, but she could feel it. Every drum of her steady heart-beat against her rib cage that was pressed to Ezriel’s own chest. Astrid had never wanted something so much as that moment - she wished that it would last forever. She could feel him breathing against her, and she wondered what more he would say.

His fingertips felt gentle and soft against her face, and she slowly leaned into his touch, never wanting it to end. She was hopeful that he would continue to keep his hands on her. Bright eyes searched his own as she stared up at him, trying to reason what it was that was going through his head with such ferocity. He always seemed so introspective and she longed to know what it was that was going through his mind in those moments, “I love you.” She whispered again, desperate for the feeling of his lips against hers, but there was so much more to say between them.

And that was when his words broke out of his mouth. Like a flood, they fell, surrounding Astrid with a thousand thoughts that she hadn’t had before. What she would have given to know that Ez felt the same way about her, and yet…perhaps it would not have been better for either of them, “Sweet, sweet, Ez…” She breathed, reaching up and putting her hands on either side of his scruffy face. They stood there, interlocked in one another as if that was the way that they were always supposed to be, “I wouldn’t have wished this on you. I wouldn’t have wished this on anyone.” She felt like a burden with her madness, “You have fixed me. As best you can. As best as either of us can. I needed you and you understood, Merlin, you always understood. I won’t ever be…fixed, but I don’t need to be with you.”

She wanted to calm him to let him know that it wasn’t his fault - because it never had been. He had been the one to save her when she had felt so entirely lost. When Val-

Astrid shook her head immediately, trying hard not to let the memories flood this moment. They were unwanted and necessary now. Ezriel was her anchor. He was the one holding her in place like he always had been, “What if-“ The thoughts were creeping again, threatening her. What if her estranged Val found out where she was? What if he destroyed Ezriel in his rage just like he had destroyed her only son, “We could stay here. You and I,” She ran her thumb over his cheekbones, smiling up at him with a distinct twinkle in her eyes, “I want us. Ezriel, I want you more than I have wanted anything in the world.”

"Then stay," he spoke before thinking bore than a second. Every inch of him throbbed for a moment. Hanging on her words, Ez refused to let her go. She was practically asking him to take care of her, and he loved that idea. Nothing would have made him happier. Astrid was all he'd ever wanted, even if he hadn't realized it before. Maybe he had known and never could admit it; even to himself. Either way, Ezriel knew now. His stomach felt like it had rose into his chest, pushing all his other organs up with it. Oh, yes, that was exactly what love felt like, for sure.

Swallowing his heart back down to his chest, Ez dragged his thumbs over her soft cheeks. "Stay with me. If you want us, you got it." There was no doubt in his mind that he would do everything to protect her and provide for her. It all felt like cheesy lines from movies with bad acting, but none the less it felt real for him. More than real, even. It felt surreal just to hold her there in his quiet little kitchen. The house was silent for save for the sounds of their soft breathing. Pressing his forehead to hers, Ezriel took in a deep inhale and savored the sweet scent of her skin"Looking at you makes me feel like home. I feel like I belong here with you. So... Stay."

It had been a long time since Ezriel felt whole. Astrid had a powerful ability to make him truly want to be a better man. Somewhere along the path of his life he'd turned into a drunk. Nothing mattered to him anymore; not even his classes. Ez had become rude and belligerent at times. His drinking had made him destructive and careless. It was impossible for him to remember how to feed an owl, no less how to act like a decent human. Sure, he'd made the decision to check into rehab, but Dumbledore had almost made that decision for him. Ezriel was sure that if he hadn't chosen to go, Albus would have sent him anyway. And maybe it was her that brought him here. Subconsciously, he knew she was there. He knew he could be near her. Maybe the universe was pulling them together.

Despite the twinkle in her eyes, Ezriel knew there was fear and anger hiding in the corners of her lashes. His first order of business was to exile that fear and that anger, and replace it with strength and bravery. There was a darkness that haunted her; one he wasn't sure how to fight off. But he'd be damned if he wasn't going to try. Just thinking of the man brought a bubble of hatred to his chest. Ezriel's hold on her delicate face, tightened just a little before he released her cheeks and wrapped his arms around her securely. His voice dipped low, suddenly dark. "He can't get you here. I promise."

Astrid wondered how long it had been since she had felt this way. Her marriage had grown stale and abusive long before….he had taken the plunge into destitute debauchery and the demise of her own son by her husband’s hands. There had been a few of those truly gentle moments in the past decades, but none seemed as sweet or genuine as the portrait of Ezriel Adams that stood in front of her. He was the portrait of a man - caring, kind, her Ezriel. She never wanted to give him up and she knew in her bones that this was where she ought to be.

The soft hum of the kitchen was merely background music to the words that fell from Ez’s lips. Such reassurance and fascination spread through Astrid. For a moment, she was certain that her delusional brain had dreamed the whole thing up. Then again, she wasn’t sure that she was capable of such beauty within her own words. Ezriel encouraged her to stay - to be with him and she bit the corner of her lip, trying not to smile too widely at the thought. It was what she wanted: to stay and be a part of their life together, “Stay.” She repeated, her voice ever so slightly softer than it had been before, “You and I, Ez. Just you and I against the world. Sometimes I feel as if this was all how it was supposed to be. All along.” His thumbs crossed over her cheeks as she fluttered her eyelids closed. There was a certain soothing quality that accompanied his touch. But behind her eyelids, the war raged on.

Astrid couldn’t begin to imagine what would happen if Val discovered her true whereabouts. Surely he would take Ez from her in an instant…and that could never happen. Her hands sought the safety of his chest as she stared up at him. He seemed so reassured…so strong in his convictions. He was right - Val couldn’t get her here. He would try to grasp at the untouchable, but in the end, he could never reach her. With Ezriel, she felt safe - unlike the chaos that she had felt over the past year. His arms were around her as she pressed her head into his chest, listening to the nearly deafening sound of his heartbeat, “He always finds out. He knows everything. Ears everywhere. Eyes everywhere.” In fact, Val probably already knew what she was up to. He knew the whole story. And he was waiting for his opportunity to strike. But she couldn’t dwell and cease to live as she had been for the past six months, could she? Human. They were both entirely human , neither whole nor put-together, equally as damaged, but somehow they had managed to find one another. Despite the chaos and destitute nature of the last few months, she believed him when he said it, “I’ll stay.”

“But you must promise me that-“ She hesitated, pulling away ever so slightly so that she could see his face. Those beautiful features that looked pristine from every angle, “We must never go back to what we were.” Her voice was gentle, though her words rang true, “I will fight every day if it means keeping you clean, as you would do the same for me.”
