Alice took the tiny bottle in her hand and studied it curiously. She’d thought, before, that it would feel better knowing she could go home, so assured that she would. Responsibilities, her mother, all of that aristocratic nonsense, was waiting for her up in her world, away from Underland, her Wonderland, and everyone she knew here. Here she was a champion, the slayer of the Jabberwocky, the Alice, not just an Alice. Well, she could always…
“You could stay,” came his voice like her mind had decided to speak to her through him. She turned, smiling softly at her madman. He was the first to believe in her, when everyone called her the Wrong Alice. He sacrificed himself for her. He helped her. He never left her side if he didn’t have to. He was her first thought when she realized all this wasn’t a dream; she’d thought that, thank God, he was real.
“What an idea,” she answered and she could see how his features displayed his new found hope in her accepting his offer. “What a mad, crazy, wonderful idea.”
And with that, Alice knew that she hadn’t just fallen down a rabbit hole, she’d fallen into something much stranger.
“I’m going to have to make a slight alteration to my previous proclamation of believing in six impossible things before breakfast,” Alice said, smiling kindly at her Hatter and giving no further thought to the purple poison. “Seven, it seems. Seven, if I count it, is that I seem to have fallen in love with you, Hatter. And of all the wondrous things I’ve seen and come to know since squeezing through that tiny door, is the best of it all.”
