In The Midnight Hour || Lucy

Lucy had no idea that Kat could interpret the expression on her face. She wanted to appear as casual as possible. She had always assumed in a situation such as this that it wouldn’t affect her at all. Kat’s smile and overall attractiveness helped calm Lucy, however. She seemed warm, inviting… comfortable. It was a strange feeling that Lucy allowed wash over her. 

“I guess now you know someone who can relate to you,” Lucy offered up. “It only took since I realized that I was attracted to women.” She didn’t know why she was saying this. Lucy never related to anyone. She still wasn’t sure that she related to Kat – just because they shared the same sexual orientation did not mean that they were necessarily the bestest of friends automatically. It was just one thing they had in common. However, Lucy wanted to make Kat comfortable. She seemed like a nice girl who deserved it.

By the time Lucy pulled on her coat she realized that something had changed in Kat’s face, although she couldn’t quite explain what. Had she said something wrong? Lucy traced back her words and couldn’t find anything necessarily offensive for a while. She tried to just ignore it. 

She headed to the door and went through it into the snowy night. The cold was bitter against her skin, but it wasn’t as bad as usual. She wasn’t exactly sure which direction to take, so she just chose at random. She ended up finding a small trail that led up a hill behind some of the shops.

“This looks interesting,” Lucy said, not even sure if the other girl had followed but hoped she had. Lucy liked to find new places. She explored quite frequently and found fascinating places all the time. However, she was always alone. This was the first time she had adventured with someone else, even though all she had promised Kat was a walk, not an adventure. 

Lucy was somewhat glad that Kat had decided to follow after all. “I haven’t been down here either,” she said. It was a little dark, but since the whole town was deserted, it hardly seemed frightening. She could see the breath fog in front of her mouth as she spoke and knew that the temperature had begun to drop. She walked through the alley, not really finding much of interest. There was a fence that followed along the side of them, almost saying where the properties ended. 

About halfway down the alley there was a break in the fence that led to a trail in the snow. Someone had come through here – actually, it looked like many people had at some point as the snow was packed down. It led up a hill, and she was too curious to not try to explore it. 

“Hey, look at this!” Lucy called excitedly. She didn’t wait long before she began to climb. The snow got into her boots, but she didn’t really pay attention to it. She was too excited to find out where this whole thing led to. She doubted Hogwarts students knew about it considering it was well hidden in behind everything else. Whoever was using the trail was no doubt a citizen of the town, or many citizens. 

It didn’t take her long to get to the top. When she did, she turned around and was pleased with her view. She could see the entire small town of Hogsmeade. She could see the small windows lit up in the flats above the shops, and the lights on in the houses and the small amount of shops that were actually open. The snow was still falling, and it created a beautiful scene. 

“How are you doing on the trail, Kat?” Lucy called, prepared to help the other girl just in case she had gotten stuck for some reason. The trail wasn’t that hard to navigate, though. “You’re going to love this,” Lucy promised. 

Lucy enjoyed the view by herself for a while. Her mind wandered to the blonde that was closeby. There was something about her that didn’t make it seem like they would make terribly good friends – but yet Lucy was attracted to her. It made almost no sense whatsoever. How could you be attracted to someone you couldn’t be friends with? Well, the answer was easy. It was shallowness. However, it wasn’t like she disliked Kat by any means. She liked hearing what the girl had to say. It was all so confusing and she couldn’t even make sense of it… that made it all the more exciting for Lucy, though. Things that made sense and just fell into place were always so dangerous. 

“This isn’t my first adventure, you know,” Lucy called down in response. She had an eye for picking up what most people missed, especially when it came to the outdoors. She wasn’t the camping type or anything, she just liked to go for walks. Those walks weren’t as exciting if they were always leading to the same place. Lucy learned long ago to make fun for herself and find places that no one else could find. It made it more comfortable for her as she didn’t have to pass elderly people walking elderly dogs and have to feign a smile when they gave some sort of inevitable greeting.

She was admittedly pleased that Kat enjoyed their little spot. She looked at Kat’s face to read the joy, and found that she looked for a little too long. She took in everything on the blonde’s face as Kat looked away. She really was good looking. Lucy finally managed to pull her eyes away after a few moments. She didn’t want to be attracted to Kat, in all honesty. She liked to be on her own, she liked not knowing anyone that she could be attracted to. It made life so much less complicated, and in a way that Lucy didn’t understand. 

Lucy looked up at Kat’s words and was stunned by what she saw. “Wow,” she murmured under her breath. She sat on the ground so that she could lean back and rest on her hands as she gazed at the sky. “Hey, come sit,” Lucy almost ordered. The words weren’t meant to come out like a demand, but she was just excited. She felt a cool breeze that made her shiver. “I never would have thought my night would have turned out like this,” Lucy admitted as she turned her eyes back to Kat momentarily. 

Lucy shrugged. “It’s whatever I want it to be, and I’ve decided it’s an adventure. We were exploring, that counts as an adventure, doesn’t it?” she noticed that Kat had been winded. She must have not done this often.

She was glad when Kat listened and sat next to her. The Aurora Borealis was quite stunning, especially out in the middle of nowhere like they were. As much as Lucy was outdoors, she never truly appreciated the sight as much as she did in that moment. Perhaps it had been because Kat had pointed it out and therefore she knew it meant a lot to the other girl. Whatever the reason, Lucy watched the lights flicker across the sky. 

The corners of Lucy’s mouth upturned at Kat’s statement, although she didn’t respond to it. She was glad she met Kat, too, even if she wasn’t exactly sure how to react around the blonde. Without turning to look back at the girl next to her, she blurted out, “Hey, can I ask you something?” without waiting for a reply, she continued on with, “Have you ever kissed another girl before?” she had to get it out of her system. Lucy felt the need to ask. She had contemplated in her mind just leaning over and kissing Kat, but she felt the need to talk about it first. After all, they really didn’t know each other well and she didn’t know how Kat would feel about sharing a kiss with someone she barely knew. Lucy, on the other hand, in that moment wanted nothing more. However, she got the impression that Kat was just inexperienced as Lucy was and therefore a conversation seemed necessary. She wanted to know what page both of them were on. She wondered if Kat would pick up on the fact that Lucy wanted to kiss her from her question, or if Kat would interpret it as mere curiousity. 

Lucy watched as Kat’s face went from confused to sudden understanding. She was also quite surprised when Kat leaned in and kissed her. Lucy thought that it would be the other way around. She sort of assumed she would have gauged Kat’s reaction to the question and worked from there but this – this was even better. Lucy wasn’t used to being surprised and although she didn’t usually like surprises, this one she quite enjoyed. There was a tenderness to Kat’s lips that was girlish and wonderful. The kiss made a strange, warm feeling appear from the pit of Lucy’s stomach and work outward. It felt like the cold no longer existed.

When Kat pulled away and apologized, Lucy didn’t understand why. “Don’t apologize,” she directed before she leaned forward and kissed Kat again, harder than before. She leaned forward so that Kat had to lean back on her elbows again like they had been when they had stared up at the night sky together. It was in that kiss that Lucy discovered that this felt completely right. Whatever doubts that she might have had about Kat seemed to disappear. All she knew was that she wanted to kiss longer. She wanted to kiss throughout the night and memorize the way it felt. She liked the feeling of Kat beneath her, of the way their lips worked together. 

Lucy pulled away only for a moment just to take in the fact that she had a beautiful girl right there and in that moment it wasn’t like they had only met about an hour ago. It was like she had known Kat for years, despite the fact that she didn’t know her middle name or even her favourite colour. All of the sudden, however, panic raked through Lucy’s body. What was she doing? Why was she being so affectionate? She pulled away and kept to herself for a second. She turned to say something to Kat, but her mouth just opened and closed without words. Finally, she managed to say, “You know, if you ever wanted to go on a date… well, I’m free to.”

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Even as she scolded herself, she hoped that Kat would agree. 

Lucy let out a bit of a laugh. “I suppose, yes I’m asking.” She knew she was crazy. She had never been on a date in her life, and she didn’t know what to expect. It was just nice to find an attractive girl with whom she shared some sort of connection. She didn’t think she would ask, but she knew she wanted to see Kat again, and she wanted to make her feelings – or whatever they were – known. She didn’t want to just hang out or whatever. She didn’t want to be just friends. She wanted to keep kissing Kat and feeling that spark, she didn’t want to discuss other girls or whatnot. Perhaps she was just too jealous of a person for such conversation. She knew if they were on a date that that sort of conversation wouldn’t take place as it was considered rude… wasn’t it?

“The Three Broomsticks is fine,” she said, almost stiffly. She hated the idea of having to hide because of her sexual orientation. As much as she knew it was no one’s business, she also didn’t feel as if she had to hide herself. Lucy knew what she felt offended some people, but it wasn’t up to her to make everyone comfortable. “You’re comfortable with going on a public date with a girl, right?” she made sure. She didn’t know if she wanted to go on a date with someone who wasn’t comfortable with themselves wholly.
