"Do not forget to study for the test tomorrow, I expect a passing grade from all of you," Gerard said to the students who were packing their books as class ended. He normally never let his classes leave early, but considering it was an end of the day class and most of them were too busy thinking about the nights ball, he thought it wouldn't hurt just this once. He, too, thought about the ball. It was where he met his wife, a Masquerade ball on Valentines day. Not at Hogwarts, though, but one hosted by muggles in London. To him, she was the most lovely creature he'd ever set eyes upon. As soon as they locked eyes, he knew she was the one.
His attention went from the stragglers leaving his classroom to his desk on the corner of the room. Leaning on his desk, he crossed his arms and looked out the window. The sun hid behind the clouds and he had no doubt the weather was cold and windy outside. Even so, he saw people walking the lawn and over by the Quidditch field he could see people flying their brooms. His thumb pressed against ridge on the middle of his shirt- his wedding ring. How long had it been since he'd taken it off? It felt like ages, it even felt like it could have been in another life. It was another life. His life now was so different than what it was when his wife was alive.
Turning to face his desk, he pulled out the top drawer. Time to start grading essays. As soon as he reached in, he pulled his hand back out as if something had bit him. Something had surprised him, thankfully it wasn't furry like a spider. He couldn't stand spiders. Even now as an adult he still had a fear of them. And squirrels. He didn't like squirrels either. The whole thing began to feel like a game to him.
What Did I Feel in My Drawer?- he couldn't help but laugh slightly at the title of his game. Well, that wasn't parchment he touched. Not unless parchment felt like metal?.... Plastic?... What was that? Peering inside, he saw a mask that looked half broken. A small side ways smile appeared on his face slowly. Such an odd thing to find in his desk. Perhaps someone had left it there for him as a surprise. But who?
"Where did you come from?" he asked as he pulled it up in front of him to study it further. It seemed fitting to him.
