It had been an awful day, and all she wanted to do was just curl up and hide away from the entire world in the hopes that no one would find her, to disappear into another world entirely. Andromeda Black was used to being surrounded by people. She was used to having bad days every now and again—but this was the worst. She could feel her spirit crumbling around her, and her heart felt heavy. She didn’t want to cry, but her eyes felt heavy, as though given one spare chance and the floodgates would open. She didn’t want to deal with any of this, all she wanted was just to disappear—and so she did. Andromeda Black went to a far corner of the library, curled up in the stacks on the floor. No one ever went in this section this early in the term. It was still only January; exams were so far away. No one would bother her here, and she could hide and read and disappear.
It had begun this morning, when she couldn’t get her hair to style correctly. No amount of magic could help, it was simply one of those days. After throwing her hair into a loose ponytail, hoping everyone would ignore that it wasn’t up to her usual standards—Andromeda had always prided herself on looking good—she had ventured down to breakfast… where she had a classmate elbow her glass of juice, and ruin her shirt. Even with the quick trip back to the dungeons before classes began to change shirts, she could smell the citrus and felt almost sticky all morning. She just wanted to take a shower and be done with it. It couldn’t get any worse, could it? Ha. In potions, it turned out that a dormmate had stolen the essay she had worked for hours on, and left her with a terribly half-assed copy of her work to turn in as Andromeda’s own. She was embarrassed enough for the other girl’s work that she refused to turn it in at all. Lovely, since she had been so proud of the work. It made her heart heavy, and the disappointed look her professor gave only compacted that.
Bellatrix then yelled at her for walking around looking as she did – hair not perfect, not at her best, and not with her usual mask of perfection and duty and smiling and charming. She was just so tired. She tripped and fell down fifteen steps on a moving staircase, spent half an hour getting the resulting bump on her head checked out by the nurse, and then was late to her arithmancy class, earning yet another look from a professor that day. By the time classes had let out for the day, Andromeda had felt broken—this was not her. This was not how her life went. She took care. She looked good. She did her work. She was graceful, not clumsy. She was a good pureblood girl, she did what she was supposed to—and today was proving to be the antithesis of everything she was. All she wanted at the end of it was to disappear, and so she did.
Her book was a world of fiction into which she could fall for several hours. Her greatest hope was to be so invested in it that she could completely miss dinner, and just slip into her dormitory after everyone else had fallen asleep. The last thing she wanted was to deal with another human soul this evening. Andromeda had spent three hours between the pages of her book, now to the point where it was scarcely a few inches from her nose. Finally, she had found her place of peace, and everyone else should be safe, far away from her at dinner – when someone stumbled over her.
For a moment, Andromeda was simply in shock – her mouth formed a wide O as she stared at the boy who had tripped right over her. Her book had been sent flying—her page lost, regrettably—and she was now half-sprawled over the aisle herself, feeling jumbled. And then the anger took over. The usually calm, collected, quiet Black sister had simply had too much today—and her temper was unleashed. ”What the hell is your problem?” She hissed, keeping her voice down so as not to arouse the suspicion of the librarian. ”Can you not pay attention to where your feet are moving? Could you not see me?!” Her eyes narrowed. ”And shouldn’t you be at dinner?” She glared at the boy, furious and hurt and just wishing for this day to end.
