Chase never really got invited to fancy parties like this, but, given that he was both Noel’s best friend and now Shae’s boyfriend he kind of had an in since the Whitmores were the one of the families throwing the thing. Plus, it was for a good cause, storm damage and all of that. Not that Chase’s pay he got from his internship at the radio station would have been enough to give anything reasonable to the relief fund. No, he supposed that was what the Whitmores, Blakes and Deverauxs were doing. They were the big names in town, after all, you didn’t have to be in Long Hollow long before you realized that. Chase supposed part of him was lucky he got to know Noel so well freshman year. It had been days since he’d seen or heard from Noel and he’d started to get worried. Where the hell had he gone without telling anyone? He understood there were some things you couldn’t tell your parents or your family, but… he was him. Chase wondered if there had been something seriously wrong. He asked Shae about it, but she didn’t give him anything to go on.
The party was a masquerade, and a fancy one at that. Chase felt underdressed for the entire thing. Hell, he was underdressed for the entire thing. He wore a mask, sure, but he wasn’t dressed in a suit like most of the other people. He was wearing a suit jacket, a dress, shirt, a tie, but his skinny jeans and sneakers stuck out like a sore thumb. He didn’t mind so much, though. He was comfortable, and he hadn’t been kicked out yet so he figured he couldn’t be all that underdressed. At least there weren’t holes in them? He was sure if his mother was here she’d be absolutely mortified for him, but, well, she wasn’t here and for that he was an incredibly grateful teen.
He felt his phone buzz in his pocket and took it out. Noel. A grin appeared on his face as he read the text saying he was in the library. Well, Chase knew where he was heading… provided he found the place first. This house was unnecessarily massive and he refused to believe the James’ weren’t hoarding an army of people for world domination or something. No one needed that many rooms! He’d already gotten lost twice on his way to and from the bathroom and the kitchen, so he made his way tentatively around the house, trying to avoid questions with people he didn’t know and he let out a breath of relief when he reached the library and saw Noel.
He raised a brow under his black mask that covered his eyes, a smirk across his face. “Where the hell have you been?” he asked, chuckling as he walked over near the couch. Four days without seeing Noel was one thing, four days without communicating with Noel at all was basically an unacceptable form of torture. He sat down next to his best friend on the couch, deciding to make himself comfortable if he was going to hear all about Noel’s adventures, but, there was something important he had to ask first before any adventure-story-telling happened. “Are you okay, dude? What happened? You literally dropped off the face of the technological world.”
Chase hadn’t even noticed Spencer and Oliver were in the library or when they came in…until he heard the strange sound coming from on top of the bookshelf. He froze for a moment, his blood running cold in his veins with fear before he turned to look up and find… a lizard…. Thing? Chase’s heart started hammering in his chest. “WHAT in the hell is that?” Chase blinked, his head immediately turning to look at the doors to the library. They seemed miles away. Ugh. And what if this thing was like a t-rex and once they moved it would attack? It seemed more velociraptor, though, which was unfortunate because it meant they were probably fucked either way.
“Something tells me that’s not something pom-pom queen keeps as a pet…” Chase looked to Noel before glancing around the room and trying to assess what their options for survival were. That’s when he spotted Spencer and Oliver. Well, that was partially good because maybe things were going well for Spencer with him. But, the other half of him, the majority of him, thought: Great. Greaaat. He was going to die in this fucking library with Oliver Johnson being one of the last people he saw. Life had a cruel and unusual way of punishing him for trying to be a good person. Maybe if they didn’t move… it wouldn’t move?
