Ava found herself sitting in Charms with her face placed heavily into her palm with her elbow upon the table. Her eyes were glazed over, and it wasn't that she intentionally wasn't paying attention, but the room was very warm, and it was putting her to sleep. Her heavy uniform never seemed so comfortable, and before she knew it, her face hit the table with a rather loud thud. Ava raised her head in an embarrassed fashion, and smiled awkwardly at anyone who stared at her for a little too long. She was therefore very relieved when class was finished and they were all excused. She slung her rucksack over both shoulders. She tried to put it over only one shoulder before, but it always seemed to be too heavy for her small frame.About halfway to the Owlery, she paused and dug through her bag for her letter. It wasn't anything important, merely a letter to her family. She had been meaning to write them back for ages, but it never seemed to happen. She didn't know why it particularly mattered: she would be home for good in just a few months' time. Then again, she would no doubt be busy with job searching. She knew many in her year were already applying, but none of them had gotten positions yet - as far as she was aware - so she figured employers just put their resumes in the bin for now. She wasn't even sure what she wanted to apply for. After she had her letter secured in hand, she continued her journey. When she got there, it was cold and bitter. She knew February would be even worse, so she tried not to complain, but it was difficult when the wind was furiously whipping her on her nearly frost-bitten face. She made her way carefully up the iced stairs and gripped the handrail tightly with her gloved hands. She realized she should have waited until she actually got there to take out her letter. Right near when she got to the top, her foot didn't quite land on the step and the ice caused her to fall down. Ava slammed her chin on the stairs rather hard, jolting her entire system. She felt the tears before she meant them out, and she curled up on the stairs, completely forgetting about the letter that had since escaped her grasp. She took off a glove quickly and put it to her chin - blood. Lots of it. She could actually feel the warmth of it creep down her neck. She could only imagine how she looked. Ava quickly put her glove back on, grabbed a ball of snow and applied it to her chin. Only after she did that did she realize that her letter had gone missing.
