Bellatrix Black - Star Beater and Captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team, also had another very important position under her belt. Or at least, most people would think it was very important. For the eldest Black sister, her duties as a Prefect were nothing more than an annoyance that she could use to her advantage when she felt like it. Advantages were listed as follows: Ability to exceed Hogwarts curfew, prefect’s bathroom, constant alibi if need be, ability to take House Points from Gryffindor.
While the annoyances came to the grand total of: having to deal with the likes of the Gryffindor Prefects on a regular basis.

To many, dealing with the Gryffindors was simply a daily occurrence. But to Bellatrix, she believed that they were so far beneath her, that to engage them in simple conversation, she had to lower herself about thirteen years in intelligence, as well as crouch so that she was always on their level.

Tonight was no exception to the ever so constant annoyance of the Gryffindors, after all, patrols frequently had to be done in pairs so that the girls wouldn’t get frightened by the likes of the Bloody Baron and Peeves. Bells was supposedly to be paired up with the Evans Mudblood. She felt her teeth strain together and her jaw clench at the very thought. The object of Potter’s affections as well as a brown-noser and obnoxious addition to the Gryffindor house. Lily was perhaps one of the only people that really pushed Bellatrix’s buttons without doing anything to her. It was that red hair, smile, and laughing attitude that made Bells want to wrap her fingers around the girl’s neck and make her wish that she had never been born in the first place.

Bells stopped at the corner of the corridor where she was to meet the perpetual pain in her ass and began tapping her fingernails across the stoned walls. If the girl was more than a few minutes late, she was going to leave without her. Hopefully with a little persuasion, she could get Peeves to dump a bucket of soiled toilet water onto her when she wasn’t looking.

Lily's day had started out great. She aced her exam in potions, which she wasn't really surprised about but then she also passed her transfigurations test which had been a little bit of a surprising bonus. She could understand the basics of the subject, and it wasn't that the course was horribly hard or anything it was just that she had trouble with the muggle part of her mind accepting it. She had seen enough things in her life to convince her that anything was possible, but when it came to cups actually changing into beetles in front of her eyes she tended to have a small hangup somewhere in the back of her mind.

When she received her Hogwarts letter it had been easy to let go of her muggle side. She was different, and suddenly everything had made sense. She had been worrying so badly over the fact that she could do things others couldn't do and it had turned out to be a gift and a blessing. She had embraced the wizard inside her, but she still had the muggle somewhere underneath. She knew she always would, and she didn't mind it.

She might have not minded, but there were more than a few students inside Hogwarts who did. In the top ten of that list was the girl she was meeting tonight. She had went into to the Gryffindor common room, with a huge smile on her face and had plopped herself down on one of the comfiest couches by the fireplace. She had a book to read, and felt like it was purely impossible for the day to get any better. That was until one of her fellow classmates asked her why she was here and not meeting Bellatrix Black for the nightly patrol. She had forgotten.

Maybe it was her mind trying not to ruin the day with the thought of Bellatrix or maybe it was the joy from acing her transfiguration exam, either way that was how Lily now found herself in a panic. She jumped from the chair and took off in a sprint towards where she was suppose to meet the other girl. Five minutes, she had five minutes to get to the other girl who was no doubt already in a foul mood. She couldn't be late, she wouldn't be late. She took off running, yelling apologies down the hall as she ran and almost knocked down a hufflepuff girl. She ran down the corridors, taking the steps two at a time. She turned the corner with less than a minute to spare and finally made it to the other girl.

She was breathing harder, but smiling broadly from getting there right in the nick of time. She smoothed down her hair and tried to not let the situation ruin her day.

" Hello Bellatrix. How are you this evening?"

Time was ticking away of Bellatrix’s internal clock was making her anxious. The sooner she got this evening over with, the sooner she would be able to return to her studies of the Dark Arts under the careful instruction of Professor Riddle. Right as she was about to give up on Evans showing, someone rounded the corner, panting and sweating like a whore in church. ‘Dammit,’ She internally growled, only realizing then that she had desperately wanted Lily Evans not to show this evening.

Leaning down and putting her hands on her knees so that she was crouched to the level of Lily’s own height, Bells spent a long time staring at the Evans girl before she spoke. Her green eyes carefully examined the girl’s face, trying to figure out what it was that made her tick. She was an anomaly, one that Bells knew would have to die in the end because of her mudblood birth. But right now, she was nothing more than another pathetic annoyance that Hogwarts had launched at her, ”I’m certainly glad that you’ve decided to grace us with your presence, Lilian.” The annoyance and frustration was thick and sappy in her voice, leaving no room for misinterpretation from her assigned counterpart.

”I’m just peachy,” She practically snapped and straightened her back so that she was standing up pin-straight yet again. Her eyes were still scanning the girl, the corners of her lips turned up in a distasteful smile. Bells didn’t offer the girl a return of the question, deciding that it was far too sympathetic of a gesture for her to do so. Instead, she just stood there staring.

Adjusting the Prefect’s badge that adorned her emerald robes, the raven-haired girl nodded toward the hallway, ”Did you swim here, Evans? Or is that all a worked up sweat? I never imagined running through the halls was so...strenuous.” Truth be told, there wasn’t any dishevelment in Lily’s appearance, Bellatrix just needed something to pick at, something that would make her feel better about spending the next couple of hours hanging around the red-headed abomination.

Bellatrix had crouched down so she was level with Lily's face and stared for a few odd, intense moments. The other girl was a mystery to Lily. She couldn't see the joys of taking life so harshly. She figured that Bellatrix had probably had a hard childhood, she didn't imagine the Black family was very fond of kissing cheeks and making s'mores together, but surely the girl didn't want to continue this cruel cycle. She couldn't see what the appeal to be so mean to everyone around her was. Lily wondered if the other girl ever got tired of not having any friends.

She couldn't imagine not having friends. Throughout her life she made friends easily, even when she was dealing internally with the issues of being different as a muggle. She could never see a need in bringing others down, and tended to not judge people harshly so it was easy to befriend her. She cherished her friendships, wizard and muggle alike. She still went to the movies with her old muggle friends when she was visiting her family. She just couldn't imagine life without having people to talk to and people to encourage you.

”I’m certainly glad that you’ve decided to grace us with your presence, Lilian.”

It was obvious that Bellatrix didn't want to have this patrol happen any more than she herself did. The girl was obviously biding her time until she could go back to the Slytherin's room and come up with curses, tease little children, or whatever else slytherins did to pass the time.

" Grace us Bellatrix? Do you have a mouse in your pocket?"

She smiled a little though she knew the other girl probably wouldn't understand or have even heard of that particular muggle phrase. When Bellatrix didn't ask her how she was she wasn't surprised. Bellatrix wasn't known for her warm personality. If Lily had been doubting that fact the next sentence that the other girl said erased all doubt.

”Did you swim here, Evans? Or is that all a worked up sweat? I never imagined running through the halls was so...strenuous.”

Lily put her hand to her chest in mock saddness, as if the girl's opinion actually mattered at all to her.

" I apologize Bellatrix, you see we all can't have a shining personality and natural gift for physical activities like you do. Life just couldn't be that glorious to all of us. "

She couldn't help the grin that was on her face. She had said everything with a heavy dose of sarcasm of course. Though it was true that Bellatrix did have quidditch skills the other girl's personality was about as shining as a dull, black rock. This wasn't how she wanted to spend her day. It had started out so well, and now she was trading spars with Bellatrix Black in the hallway.
