To say Eddie Muler was a fool was an understatement. The kid could be a complete idiot and almost seemed utterly shameless. He was always fooling around and fidgeting and many of his classmates claimed that him being sorted into Ravenclaw was some sort of mistake. It had to be! The boy didn’t seem to show a lick of intelligence. This was all an act though, a defense Eddie developed when he was younger to help him fit in. Play the clown, make’um laugh, and don’t ostracize them with big words and complicated ideas. Dumb yourself down, because pity was a great tool for making friends. The only place this little act wasn’t performed, was in the Care of Magical Creatures classroom.
Not unlike most Ravenclaws- he was finding out- Eddie had spent a lot of his time growing up with his face buried in books. Eddie devoured books, and his favourite, since he was a kid, were books on animals. The hobby had started off with Eddie trying to find facts on cougars to prove to his dad that it was safe for his friends and him to play outside, but scanning through the book on big cats was enough of a taste to get him addicted. He read every book in the public library on big cats, eventually moving on to other large carnivores like wolves, which turned into a fascination with lizards and snakes and other reptiles. This led to arachnid, and this led to poisonous animals, and then anything strange and dangerous. Once the boy had devoured ever book the large library had to offer on real creatures, which could no longer satisfy his need for strange and exciting, he turned his attention to mythical creatures.
Who knew only a few years later he’d be learning, hands on, that all these story book creatures were true.
“Hippocampus is a Sea Horse creature, with the upper body of a horse, and a scaly, dolphin like tail for it’s lower body. The lake dwelling Hippocampi are sought after for their seaweed like manes which are used in potion making and wandcores.” The boy said assertively, standing proud and tall when he was called upon. “And Hippocampi are herbivores, unlike the other aqua horse, the Kelpie, who eat mostly human flesh.”
Today was a hands on day, one of Eddie’s favourites, and even though it was a chilly day, and they were down by the lake where it was moist and had no shelter from the wind, Eddie was all smiles. They had all been assigned with the task of trying to persuade a herd of newly discovered Black Lake Hippocampus to come close enough to feed and clip a few strands off their manes. Most people had brought carrots, or forgot about bringing something and were stuck with the extra seaweed the professor had brought, but not Ed. He was testing out a theory.
“Come here boy...” he whispered to the surface of the water, as he crouched down beside the lake and dipped his handful of sugar cubes under the surface. He waved his hand around a little, trying to spread the slowly melting sugar through the water. He bit his lip, fighting hard to keep his hand under the chilly water. It was gonna be worth it. He was sure the beast was going to come to him...
