He climbed the steps of the owlery quickly, trying to be mindful 0f the untied shoe lace that he was to lazy to stop and re-tie. Bengamin beaming with excitement about the letter he was about to send to his father.

Markus Myers worked as an Auror and Benji was very rarely excited to tell him anything. After his wife's death, Markus became very distant from Benji, he also became very tough on him. Every time he had good new, or a great mark or something exciting to share, Markus always seemed to find a flaw, or a mistake or a reason to be negative. But this time, this time Benji was sure that he would be proud, he had to be.

Benji wasn't even sure why it mattered to him so much but for some reason he was always trying to get his approval. Maybe it was because he thought it would make him a man, but deep down he knew it was because his dad was all that he had left of his mom. He was only 8 when she died, and he missed her everyday. But life goes on and so does Benji, or at lease he tries to. The letter in his hand was going to make his life better, he just knew it! His father had been extra rough on him the last few months but this news was going to turn it all around!

Benji paused as he reached the top of the stares, looking in the large room he admired all the beautiful creatures. He knew his father owl was around somewhere, but the bird hated him for some reason and was never around when Benji needed it. He scanned the room a couple of times before finally spotting the bird. It was up high on one of the rafters. Benji stuck out his hand and called the bird "Niko, come on Niko". Nothing, the bird did not move an inch. Benji looked at his letter and back at the stubborn owl. He WAS going to send the letter all he had to do was get that dumb bird down from the rafters...

Carmen carried a large package with her. It was so big it blocked her view and she had to walk up the stairs of the owlery blind. Taking care to not trip, she moved forward without lifting her feet, only dragging them in order to prevent herself from missing a step. Finally reaching the doorway, she threw the package down. "Phew! Almost dropped this big log! Could you imagine if it slipped? I'd roll down these stairs like a cheese down a hill!"

She looked up at the boy trying to reach an owl. "Ey Benji need some help with that owl? Could always cast a spell to levitate it to ya. Course I don't know what the spell is," she shrugged. She always did all of her spells nonverbal, and they werent in forms of words, but feelings and what she wanted. It's like she and her wand were one and the same.

Benji spun around at the sound of another voice in the room. Standing before him was Carmen Blake, a seventh year Hufflepuff. "Trouble doesn't even begin to describe it" he said, slightly embarrassed at his inability to control a bird, "The bloody thing hates me!"

Benji looked at the girl, she seemed sincere with he offer of help. "A levitation spell would be awesome," Benji pointed to his fathers owl, "I need to get that brown one with black spots." He tried to call the bird again, "Niko, Niko," The bird just stared at him, cocking his head slightly to the left. "OH COME ON YOU STUIP BIRD!" Benji was getting frustrated, "See what I mean," Benji looked back at Carmen.

It was frustrating for him to not be able to get the bird to come to him. Benji loved animals and liked to think that they liked him too. Care of Magical creatures was one of his best classes. Niko was just different and Benji couldn't figure him out.

Carmen didn't attempt to even hide a smile. She looked up at the bird he pointed to and wondered if there was something wrong with it, was it tired? Or maybe it was hungry? Perhaps it was lonely? No, those couldn't be it. She took a step closer to the bird and tilted her head, studying it for a bit. Pursing her lips together as if she were going in for a kiss, she made clicking noises with her tongue.

"Heeeere birdy birdy birdy! Heeeere birdy!" she chirped, "Who's a pretty bird? Huh? Who's a pretty bird?" She looked foolish doing so, but Carmen never cared about looking foolish. After a while, Carmen gave up completely out of breath and muscles hurting from standing on her tiptoes and arms reaching up to the owl. She leaned on a beam and shook her head, "Well, he must not like me either." It seemed to Carment that perhaps the bird had issues. She was going to send off her large box to her mom, but thought it could wait as Benji needed her help. Carmen already knew what she wanted to do with the package seeing as it was too big for the owl to carry. A simple shrinking spell would do the trick. The only problem was Carmen had not mastered the shrinking spell. She had played hooky that day and decided to skip all her classes to play pranks with Peeves. Shrugging, she pulled out her wand.

Keeping the wand pointed down to the floor she looked at Benji with a mischievous smile. She thought of the spell she wanted, what she wanted it to do to the owl, which was immobalize the bird and pull it closer to them. She'd learned the spell a few years ago, but it was with inanimate objects. Before she could fully think it through, she flicked her wand at the bird. The owl froze as if caught in a skin tight cage, then floated closer to her and Benji. It floated in the air in front of them, it's eyes twitching from her to Benji.

"I think you're good to put the letter on it's leg while I have him contained," she said keeping her focus.

Benji smiled as the girl tried to coax the bird down, she looked kind of funny but he managed to contain his laughter and keep a relatively straight face. 'Maybe it is not just me he doesn't like' The bird didn't move an inch. Once Carmen had given up trying to call the owl down, she paused for a moment. Benji watched her as she pulled put her want and gave him a suspicious grin. He expected her to point her wand and speak a spell, but the next thing he knew, his owl had floated down and was suspended in the sir right in front of him. He looked half annoyed and half completely terrified. Benji just hoped that whatever Carmen had done would hold until after he get the letter on. That bird was not going to be a happy camper if he got loose.

"I think you're good to put the letter on it's leg while I have him contained,"

Benji looked from the girl to the owl and back again, "How... how did you..." he spluttered, as he tied the letter to the owls foot, "You didn't even say a spell,". Benji had heard of people who could cast spells without using the incantations but he had never seen it done. "I don't know what just happened, but thanks!" Benji backed away from the owl to let Carmen know that he was finished attaching the letter.

"Big box," he said noticing the immense size of Carmen's package. He wondered what trick she had up he sleeve to send it. "What are you mailing, a dead body?" Benji chuckling a little at his own joke, not realizing that is wasn't really that funny. "But in all seriousness," Benji recovered his composure, "What are you mailing... if you don't mind my asking?"

Carmen smiled at Benji, her concentration losing focus as well as the spell. The bird began to flap it's wing wildly causing Carmen to step back. As she did so, the back of her foot caught a line and she fell tumbling back. Looking up at the owl, she frowned and shook her hair free of feathers.

She shook her fist at the bird that was now flying away and making it's way up to the sky to deliver the letter. She looked at as much of her hair as she could see and picked out the feathers, though missing some on the back of her head. Brushing at Benji's hair, she flushed in embarrassment at her almost perfect execution of a spell. After all the feathers were off of Benji, she stared at the box and circled it like a vulture.

"Oh yes, a dead body indeed," a smile spread across her face followed by a wink. "It's a pet sized wizard's chest. I just finished it a few days back, but haven't had a chance to send it yet." She tried to get a the spell that she wanted in her head and threw her energy at the package through the wand. The tip of her wand burned with a red light before it burst into nothing. Carmen grunted and stomped her foot.

"Well, that didn't work." Learning a spell was always the hardest part because Carmen didn't use words. She had to see everything in her head, almost like science. She huffed and looked at Benji.

"I think I'm doing it wrong. Because I'm trying to make the box shrink, but there are things in the box also and they must shrink, too," she said pursing her lips and tapping her chin with her wand. "How to make both shrink?" As if having an epiphany, her hands grabbed Benji's shoulder. "Could YOU make it shrink? Could you? Could you!?"

Benji stumbled back as the owl broke free. Feathers flew everywhere and it was all Benji could do to keep from falling over. He caught a glimpse of Carmen falling over as the owl freaked out, but he wasn't completely sure that the bird wasn't attacking her face. As the bird flew off to deliver his message. 'He better deliver it to the right place this time' The last time Benji had attempted to send a letter to his father, the blasted bird had taken the letter to some weird old man from England. Benji still got the occasional message from the old guy with updates on his life and such.

Benji was snapped out of his thoughts by Carman wiping the feathers from his hair. He shot her a thankful smile before snagging a couple feathers from the back of her head. A pet sized wizard chest was a cool idea. He watched Carmen as she tried to cast another spell, this one however; didn't work as well as the last. A beautiful red light appeared at the tip of her wand, but then nothing. Benji was reminded of what happed when he was first learning his patronus. The wand would light up but the spell wouldn't cast.

"I think I'm doing it wrong. Because I'm trying to make the box shrink, but there are things in the box also and they must shrink, too. How to make both shrink?" Benji turned to her as she grabbed his shoulder "Could YOU make it shrink? Could you? Could you!?"

Benji thought for a moment. The shrinking spell he had learned earlier in the year would probably work. "What spell are you using? Reducto is the one that comes to mind, but you may have to open the box and shrink the inside before you shrink the outside..." Benji wasn't completely sure how to shrink two things at once, he wasn't even sure if it was possible. "Here, let me test it."

Benji pulled out his wand and placed a bundle of straw from the room into an empty crate that was near by. taking a step back he pointed his wand at the crate. "Reducto!" With a flick of his want, a red light shot out and hit the crate shrinking it three sizes, the straw on the other hand did not shrink. Actually, the straw did quite the opposite. At first it looked like it was just going to break the crate, but due to the spell the straw erupted from the crate and hit him square in the face.

The shock of the blow knocked Benji off balance, "NOPE! I would definitely shrink the inside before the outside!"

She nodded, "Yes, Reducto. Though, I don't really have to say it. I just think about it and think of what I want." Carmen shrugged, it was hard to explain to others how exactly her spells worked with no words. She thought about what he said for a moment and nodded once more. He was probably right. Benji was a Ravenclaw after all and of course all Ravenclaws were smart. Though she wasn't a complete dunderhead, she had a tendency to be scatter brained. It was very hard for her to focus at one task and she always lost things. Carmen was the complete definition of a stereotypical blonde, though she wasn't really shallow.

Carmen watched Benji perform the spell. Her eyes widened and an even bigger smile spread across her face. She began to clap and jump up and down, but then stopped when the straw hit him on the face. A gasp came out of her mouth as her hands flew towards his face. Holding his cheeks with the palm of her hand, she moved his face from side to side to see if there was any major damage or blood.

"Are you okay?" she bit her lip as her mouth widened into a frown. She looked down at the shrunked crate and shook her head. "That's a lot of pieces to shrink," her eyes wandered to the box before looking back at him to study his face once more to make sure he wasn't badly hurt.

The straw hit him square in the face. It didn't hurt much, there were a couple of nicks here and there but overall he was fine. Carmen had gone from jumping in excitement to almost panic and she held his face and examined it. "I'm fine..." Benji tried to assure her, slightly embarrassed at his mistake, " No harm done". He smiled and then laughed a little. "Apparently I need to practice reducto a little more".

"That's a lot of pieces to shrink,"

She was right of course, it was a lot of pieces to try to shrink one at a time. "You usually just think a bout your spells right? I, mean, I think that's what you said earlier. What if when you shrink it, you think about it as one unit, not multiple units?" Benji contemplated his idea. If Carman's spells worked the way he though they did, she should be able to shrink all the pieces at the same time by focusing the spell to shrink the package as a whole and not just one part. "Do you get what I mean? "

"If you can focus on the box and what is in it at the same time, maybe you can shrink both.... Then again, if it doesn't work.... Let's just say that a chest hitting you in the face would hurt a lot more than a bunch of straw." Benji shook his head, he wasn't even sure if it would work or not. Maybe he should just keep his mouth shut. He looked back to Carmen, she had gone out of her way to help him, he should do the same.

"I can help you shrink the pieces if you want? Or you can try to shrink them all at once, your call." He looked back at the large box, and then to Carmen once more, she was a skilled witch, and definitely had more experience than he did. Benji started to wonder why she even asked him in the first place.
