It was somewhere around midnight, or atleast thats what The Grey Lady had said when she asked. Ezra was restless and a bit homesick, which led to a rather lengthy letter to her brother, who was off in Borneo again. She jogged up the stairs to the owlrey, letter in hand, and was meet with a mass of drifting feathers in the air and a very distressed owl.
She tucked the letter in her pocket and slowly walked up to the creature, wondering what was sending it into a flurry of wings. Upon further inspection she realized that the tiny owl had decided to take on a meal it could quite handle and was battling with a highly irate rat.
"Oi there! Calm down, little one. That's almost as big as you are! What were you thinkin' trying to eat him?" she muttered at the bird, as she picked the rodent up and sent it on its way down the stairs. The owl, while looking thankful for the rescue from its dinner dilemma, looked slightly indignant and flew off into the night. The rest of the owls that had been continuously backing up from the battle, had resettled and looked completely indifferent about the whole situation.
"Oh alright then, ridiculous bird. Try and catch something you can swallow this time, aye?" she called after it.
Turning around she went to reach for her letter only to find that it was no longer in her pocket. Her shoulders dropped and she sighed, kneeeling down and waving away piles of feathers in search of the letter. But pile after pile of feathers, the letter seemed to have disappeared altogether.
Ezra groaned irritatedly. "Oh come on. It's not it has legs! It didn't just up and leave!" This had not been on her to do list for the night. As she continued her search, moving an owl or two out of her way, the birds watched, others slept, and one here and there occasionally crashed into the owlrey on arrival.
