Sive had just come from the Owlery, and she wasn't in the best of moods. She had just sent the obligatory monthly letter to her family, full of mundane small talk about life at Hogwarts, conveniently omitting anything too magical... which was almost everything.
Her family were muggles, and they weren't particularly interested in her life as a witch. It wasn't that they were anti-magic or anything. They were average people. Middle class, her parents still married, with two children, Sive being the eldest. Her younger sister, Katie, was the golden child. Sive had never really gotten along with her mother; she was too fiery, not at all lady like. She wasn't reserved, she wasn't conciousness, she wasn't quiet and polite and willing to please. That was Katie. Katie and her mother got along with a house on fire. Over time a rift grew between Sive and her mother, and then when her Hogwarts letter arrived her sister became resentful towards her. Katie was used to being the special one. She loved her sister, but she just didn't understand. Ever since that day, a clear line had been drawn between Sive, and her mother and sister. Her father pretty much stayed out of it.
Sive went off to Hogwarts, and saw her family for a couple of months out of the year. Once a month she got an obligatory letter from them, where they'd run through the big events of the month, make small talk in letter form (which wasn't any less awkward), and once a month she sent one back, keeping the details as vague as possible, because she knew they didn't really want to know.
Sending these letters always put Sive in a bad mood, and it didn't help that it was parents weekend. She didn't really want her parents there, and she'd never really cared about her somewhat lacking relationship with her family, but having it rubbed in her face was just irritating.
But at least now the letter was sent, and parents weekend would be over soon. It was a nice day, just the kind Sive liked; the sky was clear, and the sun was shining in that weak, wintery way. The air was brisk and there was a nice breeze. She walked down towards the lake, looking over the vast expanse of water. Sive loved being outdoors, and right now was relishing the alone time.
