Basil stood staring at the wall in front of him, as if he was zoning completely as his eyes trailed to the stones in the wall, trying to figure out just where new ones stopped and started. It was the middle of the night, Merlin only knew how he had been blessed with the late night Prefect’s rounds. Sometimes he thought he was literally going to fall asleep standing up when they made him do this. He couldn’t remember who he was on patrol with, but he knew that they had sent him to check out the Great Hall for any disturbances in the peace and, in a way that only Basil King could, he had managed to end up here...staring at a wall for thirty minutes.
A sound snapped him out of his own world, causing a prickle to run across his skin, “Peeves, you arse! I hope you’re not tearing the coats of arms down again!” His voice echoed through the empty corridor. A few seconds passed when laughter returned to him. That was precisely what Peeves was doing. Muttering to himself, Baz pulled his wand from the sleeve of his jumper and began trotting down the hall, after the sound of toppling metal.
Basil ran through the corridors, pacing himself, but never quite catching up to Peeves. The poltergeist always seemed one step ahead of him. As he reached the stairs that led up to the next level, he heard the snicker of the ghost alerting him that he was moving to another floor. Surely one of the Prefects that was manning the upper levels would handle him, “Piss off!” About to turn back and retreat to looking at the wall again, Baz heard something coming from the direction of the Great Hall. Right, I was supposed to check that out, wasn’t I... He thought to himself bitterly. Very slowly he trudged back to the double doors and pushed one open, slipping inside the grandiose eatery.
He saw someone’s shape in the dim light of the Great Hall. Someone’s shadow moving against the flickering light of the ceiling candlesticks. It couldn’t be Peeves, he had lost him on the third floor and had seen him going up the staircases toward the Towers. For a minute, Baz wasn’t sure what to do. Hardly ever did he actually come across a rule-breaker; he considered himself to be more of the ‘pretty face of the prefects’ than part of the actual school law enforcement. “In the name of the Slytherin Prefects, you are hereby-” His voice got caught in the back of his throat - squeaking ever so slightly before he snapped his lips back together. It couldn’t be, The shape was all too familiar. He knew this person, “Lumos,” He pointed his wand in front of him as it illuminated a charge of blue light as he took another step forward, his light shining directly into the face of the other boy in the Great Hall.TAG; @isthatsoNOTES; EEP, sorry I suck at openers! let me know if you want anything changed!
