You don’t get everything you want in the world. In fact, it’s rare that you get anything that you really want. But you’ll always get what you need. At least, that’s what they say-
Lanta flipped the page of the memoir as she sat in the Hufflepuff Common Room. Written by one of the first Mistresses of Magic in the early 1950’s, it seemed a testimony to hard work and dedication to a cause. A shiver ran through her bones as she thought of what she was really committing herself to. Late nights spent with Black, Locke, and various other of the ‘lackeys’ as they called themselves. She was exhausted by the end of it all - hours spent trying to perfect spells that were meant for dark witches and wizards. Her dark eyes absentmindedly scanned the page of the book, not bothering to actually absorb the information. It was her first free Friday night for the past couple of months and she was spending it entirely alone and entirely with a book that meant nothing to her.
As she flipped to the next page, a jingle at her wrist made her jump ever so slightly. Mikael’s bracelet. The book seemed to fall from her grasp as it landed on the floor, her hands now occupied with the charms that dangled from the sterling silver chain around her wrist. The Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, one that simply read ‘Broadway.’ Her hands stopped on the last charm - a simplistic M that she turned over in her fingertips. What had he said about it? ‘You won’t have to miss me. It’ll be like you have a little piece of me to carry with you.’ It was cheesy, but Lanta hadn’t taken it off...despite their rather strange circumstances.“Listen I know we...well, nothing...I....are you going on that Italy trip?” Mikael asked her, smiling somewhat to himself.
“No, I - Well, I was going to, but my parents. They like everyone to be home for the holiday. Me, Desdemona, Oprheus... Truth be told, I really don’t even want to go home.” She was blushing profusely, unable to control the fact that she was excited about what was coming next...
“Then don’t. Come to New York with me.”
She should have gone to New York. She should have run away from her parents and siblings when she had a chance and now she was stuck, playing into their hand exactly like they wanted her to. Atlanta couldn’t even look at Mikael without raising the alarm of suspicion. They had classes together and she would pretend as if she was so absorbed in her work or the boy sitting next to her that she couldn’t be bothered to even look up and see if he looked at her with the same longing that he used to.
She hadn’t even realized that she was crying until she heard the steps behind her and felt the sting in the corners of her eyes, “Jeez God-” Lanta’s hands were on her cheeks, wiping away the tears that stained her skin, “What are you doing sneaking up on me like that?” She knew that she shouldn’t be rude, but there was too much emotion in her veins to keep it from spilling out. She reached down and grabbed the book back up from the floor, putting it into her lap and then running her hands through her short hair as she tried to recompose herself.TAG; @effyNOTES; let me know if you want anything changed <3 I’m excited - I figured effy could convince her to get out of the common room for something fun!
