She'd have loved to reach out and run her hand down his back. He was only a few yards away. Just at the other table across the great hall, sat the other half of her shredded soul. It was probably for the best that his back was turned to her. Severus couldn't see the ache in her eyes. After yesterday, all Lily could think about was him. From his tender possessive touch, to the deep all consuming embrace of his lips, Lily found herself recalling every little action. It wasn't that she hadn't thought about him before. Honestly, she'd thought about him more than she could have cared to admit in the beginning. Weeks ago when he'd confessed his admiration of her, Lily had been embarrassed to even disclose that sort of thing to herself. She loved her best friend. His confrontation seemed almost like an attack. It had come so suddenly like an ambush to her heart, Lily didn't have time to mentally be okay with it herself.
Never in her life had she ever been ready for any of that. Severus had a way of catching Lily off guard, and the outcome was never what she would have hoped. It always ended with Lily feeling terrible about it and, after letting it eat at her for a bit, she typically ended up trying her best to explain herself. The first time he'd left her in such a state, they had been very young. Lily was showing her sister a neat little trick she'd picked up, when the dark haired boy sprang from the bush, scaring Petunia back.
"It's obvious isn't it?"
"What's obvious?" asked Lily.
"I know what you are," he said nervously.
"What do you mean?"
"You're... You're a witch," whispered Severus.
"That's not a very nice thing to say to somebody!" Offended, Lily retreated toward her sister.
"No!" said Severus, starting after them. "You are. You are a witch. I've been watching you for a while. But there's nothing wrong with that. My mum's one, and I'm a wizard."
Petunia's laugh was like cold water. "Wizard!" She shrieked. "I know who you are. You're that Snape boy! They live down Spinner's End by the river," she told a very flustered Lily disapprovingly. "Why have you been spying on us?"
"Haven't been spying," said Severus, hot and uncomfortable and dirty-haired in the bright sunlight. "Wouldn't spy on you anyway," he added spitefully, "You're a Muggle."
Though Petunia evidently did not understand the word, she could hardly mistake the tone. "Lily, come on, we're leaving!"
Confused, embarrassed, and rather upset, Lily obeyed her sister at once, glaring at Severus as she left.
"What was it he called you, Tuney?"
"Who cares? He's strange. I don't like him."
"But... What about what he said... that I'm a witch. Tuney, what if I am? What if he was telling the truth?"
"Yeah, right. Like you're some freak like him."
It had hurt her feelings to hear her sister talk like that about what she and the little boy from down by the river were. Severus had only offended her because he had preemptively confirmed the wildest of her own theories before she could properly come to the conclusion herself. It was just the same when he affirmed his love for her. She had not yet come to terms with loving her estranged best friend when he assailed her with his lips.
After yesterday's more than relieving confrontation, Lily knew he was aware of her feelings, but she felt to make up for her embarrassment, she had to speak them as much as possible. While she contemplated just getting up and talking to him, she remembered the misjudgment he'd made and knew better than to vacate her seat. Instead she'd gotten herself so lost in thought of him, that she hadn't even heard the steps of another person stop right beside her.
