Prudentia was rather lost in thought as she read the gossip column in the Daily Prophet. Reading this always gave her great satisfaction as well as a sense of normalcy. She might be able to see the future but she certainly couldn’t see into the personal lives of others. Besides, her own life was gossip-worthy enough as it was and it made her feel good that other people struggled too. Misery loves company and all that. She took strawberries and pieces of watermelon out of a container next to her for her lunch. Pru was in good shape as she made sure of that but she also knew that maintaining a good waist line had plenty to do with clean eating. She had already snacked on an apple and some celery earlier in the day and there was a vegetable smoothie on the opposite side of her newspaper. She tried her best to not glance around the cafeteria at people chugging down coffee and eating greasy slices of pizza. Her mouth watered just at the idea of looking at someone eating a piece of pizza – God, she was insane. However she also kept in mind that those very people wouldn’t look as good as she did at her age. At fifty, Pru was frequently mistaken for being much younger. This pleased her but also saddened her. If she was still able to be thin, athletic, and beautiful at fifty, then why did her husband wander? She eyed her fruit. All this struggle for a man who couldn’t be bothered to eat a couple of carrots every now and then. He was allowed to do whatever he pleased and then fuck whomever he pleased while Pru tried her best in all areas. She tried not to feel resentful but it was growing more difficult. Not only was she aware of his infidelities but she sometimes had visions of them before they happened. She had to watch her husband’s lips touch another woman’s; she had to watch him touch her, lay her down on a bed or a sofa or… she shook her head and her black hair fell forward from behind her shoulders. He was a brilliant man and she knew that not everyone was perfect, but why couldn’t he just have had a midlife crisis and took up an interest in Muggle cars or something boring? Why did his flaw involve hurting her?Pru focused back on the column. She knew she mustn’t think about it. She had only gotten through the past few years by simply pretending. Pretending was easier than facing the truth. Pretending is what made everyone think that her family and her marriage were perfect. At the thought of her family she glanced around the room and wondered if her eyes would fall upon her son. She wasn’t particularly close to either of her children but it didn’t mean that she wasn’t trying. She knew forming a relationship when they were now adults would be difficult but she wanted to make up where she had failed. She didn’t spot her Linden so instead she smiled at someone whose eyes she had met before going back to the newspaper. Working as an Unspeakable didn't make for many friends. There were few people who worked there and it was all research. There was hardly time for small talk. She craved attention and conversation and all the normal things that people did. What Pru craved the most were friends. She was tired of waiting around all day to go home to an empty house in the hopes that Garrick just might be there.A shout suddenly sounded in the room and she heard a loud bang. Suddenly the room was full of a foul-smelling smoke. She coughed and covered her mouth and nose with her hand as she scrambled along with everyone else to get out. When she got to the corridor she wandered away from the herd slightly. It was unfortunate, but this sort of thing wasn’t uncommon. There was just so much going on in the Ministry all the time that something always interesting happened. Today it just meant that her lunch was cut extremely short.
