It wasn’t like breaking curfew had suddenly become a new thing for her. It wasn’t like she was the type of girl who would go out and cause all sorts of trouble. She preferred not to get detention, thank you. Professors and prefects just made too big of a deal about students being out. Besides, she had classes in the morning, and she was a fan of sleep. She’d more than likely return within the hour. So, it was a bit ridiculous that she got detentions every once in a while and house points taken away (although, considering how many points were taken away from Gryffindor on principal, she didn’t feel too bad about it). She’d be lying to herself and to anyone who asked if there weren’t other reasons that Gryffindor got points taken away for. Besides, over the years, Annabel had learned to be careful the few times that she decided she needed a break from the mumbling and the heavy breathing. It had rained earlier in the day so the grounds still smelt…fresh and perfect. There were other reasons that she liked to sneak out; she didn’t ever pull any pranks, but sometimes there was a nice boy. Most of the time it was because she needed to clear her head.
But, putting all of that aside, the night was beautiful. The sometimes-brunette had had the foresight to wear heavier clothes so that the cold air wouldn’t absolutely freeze her. She understood that it was March and that everything was starting to become a little warmer, but Annabel had always been on the scrawnier side. It meant that when she was chilled, she was cold down to her bones. And, since she was breaking curfew, it wasn’t like she could start a fire or do anything besides using a warming charm on her clothes; which she absolutely did. Her currently-brown hair was let loose and was askew from her haven laid down in an attempt to go to sleep. Questions about what she was going to be doing after Hogwarts were running around in her mind. She would, after all, be graduating soon. Her father was…well, her father was something else, and her favorite person in the world was currently working in the Ministry. It was just that she wasn’t sure that was what she wanted to do. It certainly didn’t help that there were so many people wondering what her plans were. If people could just…back off for a couple of minutes and let her worry about it herself, she’d feel more relaxed.
Wandering around and letting her feet take her wherever they wanted seemed like a good enough plan, so she wasn’t too shocked when she found herself down by the lake. She was aware that her general consensus was to go outside, but she thought she’d find some nice little place on the lawns and sprawl herself out. She was surprised she didn’t run into anyone in the halls, and even more stunned that she hadn’t even had one close encounter. With every step, she had been peering around the corners sure that someone – anyone – was going to be there and she’d have to defend herself. There had been a moment where she had figured she had heard footsteps, but, when she had stilled, there were no sounds. She curled herself up and let her head rest on the trunk of the giant tree that grew near the lake. Hopefully, it would hide her body from view of anyone looking out the windows of Hogwarts. As a bonus, it provided her with a nice pillow to relax against. If she were lucky, perhaps she’d even see the giant squid.
