Rian had received a letter on Thursday morning, informing him that his friend Keira had turned down the gig with the World Cup team, working as a strategist. He didnt understand and neither did Jared, at least based on the letter he didnt. Immeadiately Rian sent Keira a letter, asking him to meet him in Hogsmeade and then took off for the castle. He wanted to see if Dumbledore knew what had happened or if he had any new suggestions. Albus Dumbledore had petrified Rian in his time at Hogwarts but nowadays he saw him as an ally, as a person who truly understood the world and his advice was out of this world. The meeting went remarkable well, insanely different than Rian had ever imagined and it caused him to quickly take off again before meeting with Keira. This time to the pitch and again he went through the motions of an important meeting.

Luckily Jared was in and had some free time for his top chaser and good friend. They talked briefly but Rian learned two very important things in the conversation, both crucial to his conversation with Keira in a few hours. His owl had found him at the pitch and informed him that she would meet him, her letter was short and seemed to be tear stained. Hopefully he could cheer her up, hopefully.

Then finally he sat down and enjoyed the view, this was an unbelievable day and could be one that he...and Keira would remember for years to come. Never in a million years did he expect to come to this but with all the things going on in his life, it was quite extraordinary. Now he had to figure out how to ask her, or suggest it or oh this was going to be entertaining. He found his way to the Hogshead and grabbed himself a drink, he was going to need it, that was for sure.

Working for a world cup team had been a dream of Keira's for as long as she could remember, and it seemed that now it would remain to be a dream for the rest of her life. Sending an owl ro Jared to turn down the job was the hardest things Keira had ever had to do. she knew that this would be her only chance, now that she had turned it down, there was no way Jared would ever offer the position to her again, but that wasn't even the worst part. The worst part about it was that Rian had stuck out his neck to get this opportunity for her, and now she was not only making herself look bad, but him too, and there was nothing she could do about it. Just another thing in the slue of disappointment that was Keira's life. She had been crying for days since sending the owl with the decline of the position and by the time Rian's letter reached her she thought she was out of tears. Apparently she had saved some for as soon as she opened the neatly written letter, fresh tears started to fall. she knew this letter was coming, there was no way Rian wouldn't want to know why she turned to position down. She had only hoped that she could answer him with an owl, but he wanted to meet and she couldn't say no to him, it wouldn't be fair.

Her reason for turning it down was not complicated, but for some it would be hard to understand. Pulling on her cloak and shoes she sighed and contemplated the best way to explain what was going on. Rian knew a little about her past and her home life, more than anyone else, but he didn't know it all. In order to explain things to him, she would have to tell him just how bad it was, and that scared her. Keira protected herself by keeping this secret. The only way she would convince herself that nothing was wrong was to hide the truth from others. If they didn't know there was a problem, she could continue to pretend that there wasn't.

Slowly she made her way to Hogsmeade avoiding eye contact with everyone she passed. Head down and hood up she moved silently down the road, nodding softly when people said hello but remaining silent. This was going to be a hard meeting to have. She respected Rian, more than anyone, including herself and that was saying something. Glancing up briefly she spotted her friend and made her way over to where he was sitting. Pulling out a chair she sat across from him, placing her hands, finger interlocked, on the table and not looking up from them. "Hi Rian."

Rian finished his first drink and had ordered another when she walked in, her head down, filled with disappointment. He tried not to smile, he knew she was hurting but he also knew a lot more than she did. That she hadn’t lost the job of her dreams and that things could be getting a lot better for her, as long as he was around that was. She eventually spoke, not looking up at him as she did. His smile broke through for a split second as she stared down. “Hi Keira, you planning on staying for a bit, because you can take your hood down” He looked down at her, trying to catch her eyes. He understood the pain that filled them, a pain much different than their last encounter but just as deep when push came to shove.

The bartender brought him his drink and then walked away quickly, seemingly confused by the weird young lady with her hood up indoors sitting with the Quidditch legend Rian Lewis. But Rian just smiled as he waited for the young girl to walk away before speaking again at the young Ravenclaw. “So obviously I heard? Wanna tell me whats going on Keir?” He spoke softly and gently, wanting her to understand that he wasn’t mad and that he truly cared. She could tell him anything and he would never judge her for it. Granted he already knew what was wrong, or at least the basics as Dumbledore had filled him in but he hoped that she would trust him enough to tell him herself.

He leaned back in his chair and awaited the figure across from him to move, even a little bit just to reinforce that she was alive. He was about to ask this young girl to trust him, to put her well being in his hands. What was happening to him, he was on his way to get married and was now getting ready to take on a sixteen year old girl, he was apparently a glutton for punishment.

She couldn't look at him, she just couldn't. He was sure to be completely disappointed in her. Truthfully, she had hoped to be able to hide under her hood the entire time, but he saw through her defense and asked her to remove it. With a bit of a sigh she pulled it down, still not looking up at him. the pain in her eyes was obvious and she knew she was close to breaking down again. Her dreams had shattered and frankly, Keira was about ready to give up on dreaming all together. It only ever end up in tears and the young Ravenclaw was tired of crying.

His words were soft and she struggled to maintain her composure. He didn't seem nearly as mad as she expected him to be. Finally looking up at him she spoke in a voice barely above a whisper. "I... I can't take the job. I'm sorry." His use of her shortened name got to her a little, he was always so nice to her. Keira sighed lightly "My foster family has ordered me home for the summer." She had sent an owl to tell the couple that they didn't have to put up with her this summer, that she wouldn't be around. They sent one right back to tell her that they refused to let her take the job. they ordered her home. The couple didn't say it, but Keira knew why. They got money for caring for her, of she wasn't there, they wouldn't get paid. "I don't have a choice." Her 'parents' had threatened to pull her from school if she didn't come home and stay there over the summer. "I am really sorry Rian, I know what you did for me and the last thing I ever wanted to do was make you look bad."

Looking back down at her hands she swallowed. She hoped he would understand. If she went against her foster parents and was pulled from school, he life was over. 16 years old with no muggle schooling, she would end up 18 and homeless with no education at all.

Rian could feel her eyes burning a hole in the table as she did her very best to avoid making eye contact. He understood her hesitance, she didn’t know all that he did and while he was scared, she was still disappointed and scared. He was smiling slightly when she finally dropped her hood, still not looking at him. She sighed loud enough for him to hear and his smile faded slightly, she was really hurting. He was severely hoping that this news he was about to share with her would improve her mood. He spoke softy to let her know it was okay and she finally looked up at him, a small smile crossing his lips. He nodded along with her as she explained the situation and what went from her barely talking about it, to her speaking quickly and louder, clearly getting more and more upset.

He reached across the table and grabbed ahold of her hands. Wrapping his one hand around them, he squeezed lightly. Being an engaged celebrity, maybe it wasn’t his smartest move holding the hand of a sixteen year old but she needed it and in all honesty he never cared much what people thought. “Hey Keir, don’t worry about that, I’m more worried about me than you. This isn’t your fault” He pulled his hand back, not in any rush just slowly, naturally. He clasped them together and leaned onto the table. There was a piece of paper in his pocket that was either going to ruin both of their days or make them both remarkably better.

But he had his dramatic flair, much like his best friend it came out in some of the worst times. He took a deep breath and then let it out, opening his mouth to speak, unsure of the words. “We haven’t known each other long but you know me pretty well. But what you don’t know is how I grew up, see my parents were both wizards. My mother was pure as pure came but my father.” He paused laughing softly. “His family was a bit…different. See his parents had been pure as well but were fascinated with muggles and their lack of technology. They both gave up their wizarding ways and used their magic to help the muggles develop technology. They made a muggle fortune, which did nothing for my father but it has been passed down throughout my family ever since.” He coughed softly and then took another swig of his drink. “I swear there is a reason for this story” He laughed softly before putting down his drink again.

He pulled the piece of paper out of his pocket, it explained that if Keira were to sign off on it, Rian would be her legal guardian until her eighteenth birthday, meaning she would come to live with him and Raven on the holidays and he would be more than happy to let her work with the world cup team. He flipped the paper over in his hand, holding it tight. Dumbledore was a smart man and had offered Keira’s ‘parents’, if you wanted to call them that and offered them the amount they would have gotten for this year and the next, they greedily accepted. Then he had set it forth to allow him to take responsibility for her. “This…this is for you. Let me know what you think” He hesitated then reached out and handed it to her. His smile faded, he was worried she would reject his offer. He knew it was soon but this girl deserved better than what her life had thrown her and Rian could offer her a better life.

She couldn't understand why he kept smiling. Her news wasn't good news. Was he happy she didn't take the job? No, that couldn't be it. He wouldn't have called her to talk if he wanted her to turn the job down. But what was it? His hands meeting hers would normally have made her flinch away. But Keira felt comfortable around the man. He was easily the only person that was allowed to touch her. In such a short time he had managed to break through her shell. No one had ever been able to do that before.

Looking up at him once more she felt tears start to fill her eyes. "No, it is not okay! You stuck your neck out for me and I blew it!" She blamed herself for this. In her mind, it was her fault for being an orphan, for not being good enough to be adopted by nice people. "If my guardians didn't say no, you wouldn't look bad." She sighed again and swallowed, blinking the little bit of water out of her eyes and turning her emotions to stone once more. It wasn't fair. Not fair to her and especially not fair to Rian. She had no right to cry in front of him. Her frown grew slightly as he pulled away. His touch had been more comforting ot her than she had originally realized.

She kept watching him as he began to tell a story. Why he was telling it? Well it beat her. Keira had no idea what Rian's parents having muggle money had to do with her turning down the job. Sure, she was happy that he was set with money. It meant he and Raven would have a bright future no matter what, but other than that, it meant nothing to her. She raised an eyebrow as he explained that there was a point to the story. She wondered if it was going to end with him losing it and being really sad but moving on. One of her housemates had told her a story like that. She was sure it was supposed to cheer her up, but all it did was make her want to bash the kid in the face with her fist.As the man pulled a paper from his pocket, she tilted her head a little. "What's that?"

Keira froze as he explained what had gone on. The money, all that money his dad's family had earned. It was gone. But not for the reasons Keira thought. It was gone because Rian had paid off people that were ruining her life. He had essentially bought her freedom. Looking from the paper, to Rian, and back to the paper again she felt her emotional wall crumble. "You....you want to.... foster me?!" Tears immediately started to fall and Keira sobbed loudly. Not only had he payed to allow her to work, he wanted to be her legal guardian. Essentially, he wanted to be her family. The Ravenclaw couldn't find a single word to describe what she was feeling. It was a mixture of extreme happiness and extreme fear all at the same time.

As soon as he pulled out the paper, Keira was all over it. She asked what it was, tilting her head like a dog being shown a treat or a child’s toy being waved in front of him. He even saw her frown a bit when he withdrew from her. When he handed it to her, he could feel his entire body shaking. He hadn’t been this nervous since his first pro Quidditch match, and that included his proposal just a few short weeks ago. Granted Raven had been pretty forth coming about her feelings when she had agreed to his proposal before he had even asked. So the nerves had subsided a lit bit at that time, so this was definitely taking the cake. “Read” He pointed back to the paper and then she opened it.

From the first word she read, you could see the warmth return to her face. She understood perfectly well what she was reading, she finished it and then looked at Rian. He kept his face straight, still unsure if she was going to take him up on it. After about the fourth time of looking up and down, Rian felt the urge to smile or laugh but he wasn’t exactly sure it would be appropriate. Then she broke and began to sob. He picked his chair up and spun it next to hers, there weren’t a lot of people in the building so they weren’t drawing too too much attention but people definitely turned their heads towards the pair of them. He wrapped his arm around her and pulled her into his chest, suppressing some of the noise coming from the sob.

He heard her question through the sobs and he smiled down at her. He pulled her away from her so that she could see his face. “I do. And I hope you will say yes. You deserve so much better than what you’ve gotten these past sixteen years.” He hugged her again, holding her tight. Rian hadn’t always been so keen on the finer things in life, in his first year he had become friends with a lot of the Slytherin elitist, he joined in with them as they made fun of the muggle borns and less popular of the students. They were mean and unwavering bullies for absolutely no reason. Quidditch had saved him from that life and now the sport he loved was offering her the same shot, and gave him the means to help her achieve her goals. He wouldn’t let greedy bastards or anything or anyone else stand in her way.

She read the paper quickly, tears coming much faster than she even thought possible. Keira didn't know why she was crying. It was a mixture of shock, joy and an overwhelming feeling that she had never experienced before. Could this be what it felt like to love someone? Not a romantic love, no, far from it. It was a familiar love. One reserved for a father or older brother. Rian had managed to completely shatter the shield that Keira kept over her heart.

Wrapping her arms around him once he moved she buried her face into his chest. This was far too good to be true, wasn't it? He had no reason for being so kind to her. Yet here he was, asking her to sign a paper and allow him to be her legal guardian. She would never have to go back to those horrible people ever again. No more being locked in her room or having her wand confiscated every summer. She peered up at him as he spoke again, confirming that he was serious. "I... I don't know what to say....Yes!" The smile on her face was as big as it had ever been in her entire life. "How..... how did you get them to agree?!"

Shaking her head she quickly looked around. She needed a quill so she could sign the paper. "Do you have a quill?" Then she paused for a moment, the facts of the matter sunk in. "Wait.... You are getting married aren't you?" She had never met Raven Monroe or even read much of her work but the up coming wedding was the talk of the school. "To Raven Monroe right? She is okay with this?" The last thing Keira wanted to do was be a homewrecker. Keira wanted nothing more than to sign the paper right then and never have to think about her muggle foster home ever again but being the sceptical person that she had be bred to be she couldn't help but run all the scenarios though her head.

Rian watched as her eyes welled up and he felt his own eyes being pressured that way. This was one of those moments that Rian was scarcely involved with, a deepseeded emotional moment between Rian and someone else. The brunette he was hugging was a stranger just a few weeks prior and now he was suggesting he become her legal guardian. He cared about this girl more than most family members he had, it was weird for him to care about anyone but he does. Other than Raven no one had ever meant more to him, especially so quickly.

She buried herself into his chest and he held her tight. She took a second but she titled her head up to looked at him. His eyes met hers and he smiled down at her, the smile that spread across her face was undeniably the greatest thing he had ever seen. She said yes, she was agreeing to come live with him, work with the team and get a real chance at having some fun. Her second question made him chuckle softly. He pulled away, still close but no longer holding her tight. “Dumbledore let me in on a little secret.” He let that sentence hang, the smile mischievous. “Most muggles who are aware of magic, are petrified it will be used against them.” He raised his eyebrows, he had paid the bastards but his threat to turn them into turkeys seemed to be the final straw in their decision.

His waitress friend heard Keira request a quill and immediately appeared with one, he started to believe this young girl had a crush on him. He smiled at her and took it in one motion, placing it onto the table in front of Keira. As he did she brought about another question. A reminder that he was engaged, his wedding coming soon. “Yes, yes I am. Just a month away.” He grinned, he was marrying the love of his life and it was amazing. “Raven is amazing. You have nothing to worry about. If I didn’t mean it, I wouldn’t have asked Keira. Now sign the damn thing” He grinned and pushed the paper at her again. This girl’s life was going to change and for the better, and he was so lucky to be able to help her. He honestly had forgotten to talk to Raven but he couldn’t imagine it being a problem, they had discussed Keir before and she was supportive of the whole thing. Granted the guardianship was kind of spur of the moment. Oh well. Life was more fun when it was spontaneous.

This was insane, completely crazy. Rain Lewis, the quidditch superstar wanted her to live with him. Her wildest dreams were all coming true and it was a lot to take in. He would never know what this truly meant to her, mostly because she didn't have a way to tell him. He was like the big brother that took over the father''s role. Two things that Keira had never had, for for real anyway.

His arms around her felt safe and inviting as they shared a hug. It was something that could be taken multiple ways but Keira didn't care. This was a hug full of love. Not romantic love, but love just the same. She listened intently as Rian explained what Dumbledore has said and burst into laughter when he admitted to scaring her old foster family. "That is amazing, you have no idea how many times I wanted to turn that man into a toad. They were really horrid Rian, thank-you, thank-you for getting me away from them."

She smiled again as a pen appeared from the waitress. She ignored the looks she got from people around them, knowing that what was happening must look rather strange. Keira knew he was getting married, but in less than a month? This only made what he was doing for her all the more special. He was bound to be under tremendous stress, yet here he was, saving her from the foster house of doom. "I'm sure Raven is lovely. If you love her, she must be great." Keira smiled, it as going to take a little for her to be comfortable around Raven, but she owed it to Rain to keep positive and make it work. "Alright, alright, I'm signing!" Moving her hand quickly she scribbled her name on the line in her messy cursive and handed the paper and quill back to Rian. "There...." With a happy sigh she revelled in the feeling of freedom for a moment.

Rian laughed softly as she explained her typical threats. He looked down at her with a smile pasted on his face, laughing softly. “Well for future reference the idea of becoming Thanksgiving dinner scares the hell out of him” He winked and then hugged her again. Rian didn’t have much in the idea of family. His parents were alive but were distant, he was an only child as were his parents. His grandparents had long since died, the closest he had was Zach. And even he was seldom around, Rian was still hoping that he would be around when it came time for the wedding.

Keira took the pen and Rian followed her eyes, around the room people were staring. He caught the eyes of two of the patrons and with a simple motion with his finger, the men quickly turned around. Rian was used to being the center of attention but this was an intimate moment, Keira was a nervous girl to begin with and people staring at them wasn’t going to make it easier for her. Granted if she accepted she would have to get used to eyes watching her, it was part of the life that he led. Paparazzi, rumors and little to no privacy.

She spoke kindly of Raven and it snapped him back to reality, Raven was amazing and so was the young brunette in front of him. She had nothing, she had no one and yet she was one of the strongest people Rian had ever met. She was ridiculously clever and quite frankly she was the best Qudditch strategist Rian had ever come across. She deserved to be happy and Rian had the money and extra room to help her get that. With one last look at him she took to the signing, as she finished he smiled. She turned to him and his smile only grew, it was a weird yet amazing feeling. Guardianship. He held out his hand and spoke, "let’s go get your things." This was just the beginning but it was quite a start.
