The Library was always quite at this point in the evening. Students typically occupied the Quidditch Pitch for a nightly practice, the Great Hall for a late and hurried supper, or their Common Rooms. There was only an hour or so left until curfew, but Lily gave a wry smile to the kindly Librarian, knowing she would give her a pass to excuse at least an extra hour. Several times a months, she would give Lily a slip stating she was late because she had helped reorganize this or categorize that, and sometimes it was indeed true. Other nights, much like this night, in fact, she simply enjoyed the vast quietness of empty expanse around her, as she contemplated her challenging academic course work. Today, she was indulging in her favorite study- Advanced Charms. The NEWT level class had proven to require both an increase in ability, and devotion to practice, but Lily was a glutton for punishment and embraced the challenge with delight. One of the most rigorous exams of the academic year was to take place in a mere handful of weeks, a testing of the student body's skill with wordless magic. The young Ms. Evans had mastered the art, of course, but self validation comes rather infrequently for a perfectionist.
After sorting through an endless assortment of beautiful books, each with a slight coating of dust resting upon the lovely hand-dyed bindings, her delicate hands gripped the prize she so desperately sought. Gingerly, she brushed the particles of grime from the archaic, deep emerald cover, revealing the intricate golden letters embalmed on the front. Asmundr's Order: The Introduction of Wordless Magic. At last, the coveted novel that she had spent the better part of a month in search of, was finally at her fingertips. With a victorious smile, she flipped her wand in a dainty pattern and sent the remainder of her findings back to their original homes.
Though understanding the origins of wordless magic would not be covered in any exam, it was Lily's nature to seek out that which she did not yet comprehend. At the southern edge of the Library, a little reading nook nestled neatly into a tall, slender window. Velvet cushions lined the bench, and Lily immersed herself in the welcoming comfort of the material. Briefly, she glanced into the window as she pinned up her massive volumes of erratic red hair. The rain was steady at this point, and the bitter cold of savage winter was at last reaching it's end. For the next month or so, there would be nothing but the consistency of torrential down pours. But soon, she would be able to sit outside, surrounded by nothing but her books and the warmth of the sun's beating rays. How she longed for Spring, and the growth and renewal that came with the season.
Cautiously, she opened her newest novel to the introduction, and instantly became absorbed in it's words. Books had a way of drawing in her very soul, of completely immersing her as she greedily devoured the knowledge they had to offer.
