Every time things seemed to fall into all the right places, something was there to smash it to pieces again. Was this hopeless? Was she destined to ache for him and him for her? The purity war she'd thought so trite in the beginning, was killing her one truest happiness. There was a new feeling coming in. Bitterness. She despised what they were doing to him. Hated how they had won him over. Loathed that it was because she feared loving him at first that he had run into the arms of inscrutability. Her cowardliness had been the source of his dereliction.

What had she done? It was just a kiss then. Slap. It had been so easy to cast him away when she was afraid of only her own feelings and desires. She wouldn't have forsaken him so readily had she known his mistress would be their impending death. Couldn't he have just slept with another girl in spite of her? At least the chances of some tart coming after their lives was slimmer than a Death Eater knocking on the door of their happy little life. They would kill him, and then they would kill her. Could she die for him? Suddenly, the answer had become very clear to her. Yes. But she desperately wanted to avoid that, and stay with him.

His hands on her shoulders startled her back from the depths of her thoughts. Lily's eyes snapped back to his at the rise in his voice. Severus was going to fight for her. She had hoped that he would, but it somehow seemed impossible. Perhaps, in her thinking she was not much to fight for, she was underestimating his affections for her. Severus was even talking about treasony. "Sev..." She sucked in a breath as he pulled her close. He wasn't going anywhere. Despite the terrible shroud that hung over them, Lily fully believed he wouldn't leave her now.

"Don't let them take you away. Don't let them take me away. Severus... you're not alone. I'm right here, and I-" Her continued pleas were hushed by his grip on her neck. Not that she feared him, but that his hand felt like safety. It certainly got her attention. "I will never stop fighting for you. I will never let you go." The words were all she needed to hear to calm her distraught nerves. Lily didn't get the chance to say any more, as his lips claimed her again, and she surrendered to him completely.

Once, he was Icarus to her Sun, but her flames would not melt his wings and cast him down again. From the ashes of he who had soared beyond his reach, rose the phoenix Apollo. The fires that forged her radiant soul had recast him from that same, celestial light. They were as one; two hearts bleeding from a single wound and beating in unison at last. Darkness might dim the glow in days ahead, but it could not douse the blaze. Severus knew, like it was the Will of Heaven, that light would triumph – their light would never die. His love for her would go beyond the grave. And that eternal love made them immortal.

His ardent lips pressed into her skin. Fervor overthrew him, and all thought melted away. He knew only the heat of his passion for her. The fire of his kiss scorched her neck, searing with burning desire, leaving behind a mark for all to see. The inferno within him was not satisfied. He needed more. He needed to incinerate the pain that still clung damp and phlegmatic in his chest. It would only be cleansed on the pyre of his longing. What he needed was her.

He parted from her neck, returning to her lips with a deep, smoldering kiss that drew him into her. He craved her with every fiber of his being. One hand slid down the curve of her side, while the other slithered up her thigh. He broke away from the intensity of his succulent kiss, but he lingered there, inhaling her, letting her possess and enthrall his senses. He whispered, allowing each word to plant itself upon her succulent lips, "I want you... I want to know you, to taste your fire on my tongue." He ran his hand further up her leg, and he stared at her with eyes aflame.

There was a very soft purring little sigh that came from the girl. The lilt in her voice trembled over the breath, as her nerves shifted. He'd quieted the fear in her mind for the moment. His blazing lips were too much for Lily's mind to keep processing troubles. This was all she wanted, and she had it, for now. She couldn't let the moment get away. As if instantly uncomplicating their world, Lily pushed all other thoughts out of her mind. She blinked her emerald green eyes up to the sky, clearing the last of her tears.

The pillowy pout of her lips grew firm against his kiss. They no longer surprised her, but drew her in ever more. James had been so tactful in the placement of his hands, just there on her hips, nothing more. There had been nothing to the way he held her. Like it was routine for him. Severus' hands felt like hot magnets, electrifying every inch he touched while bringing her in to his body. Lily fought back a little involuntary noise, threatening her vocal cords, as his kiss overwhelmed her. When he pulled away, breaking the crashing waves of her sparking affection, the girl almost begged for another, but before she could, he spoke. Lily hung on every word, paying very close attention to his hands. The embers of his eyes blinded her to all else and the very mention of his tongue dropped her eyes to his lips, thirsty for one more kiss.

"You have me. All of me." She breathed in silent, half controlled little gasps. Gripping his shirt front, Lily stood them both up and glanced around. A few passing people had taken no notice to them, but she knew they could have. Tugging him toward her, Lily gave him a painfully soft kiss, unable to sate her want, and stepped backward. Ahead, the courtyard took a turn before it found a set of stairs that lead to a path, winding down to the pitch. It was a back route, rarely used this time of day. They could at least have a small amount of privacy.

Lily pulled him to his feet. She kissed him quietly, and he pursued her when she stepped back. She led him around the corner, out of sight. The blood pounded through his veins. Her eyes were emerald flames, which held him as transfixed as the stalking tiger. They were all that he could see; her small, excited breaths all that he could hear; her scent all that filled his lungs. If just by looking he could have consumed her, he would have devoured her whole. He touched his hands to her face. His eyes followed their path as he slowly ran them down her slender form, savoring every gentle curve, and coming to rest low on her hips. Severus closed the distance between them, and felt her shiver against his body.

He kissed her again, his tongue parting her lips. It was as though time had sped up and ground to a halt in the same instant. He was feverish, on fire, and yet he had discovered eternity. After several intense minutes, Sev tore himself away. A wicked grin the devil himself could not have matched cracked open his mouth. His hands slid up, under her skirt, as he knelt down before her. He stared up at her, hungry to prove his desire and his devotion. He slid down her pants with trembling hands. Then, with a guttural moan, he descended.

His kisses were like summer nights. The grass growing just a little too long, the sun sinking down into the horizon, the nostalgic feeling of laying on a blanket, watching the stars slowly glitter across the sky. It all crossed her mind in a flash as he held her to his lips. It felt right. The taste of his tongue lingered on hers, letting her savor it as his eyes drank her in. She didn't expect his next move, but she didn't reject it. The girl stood still, perched on her toes, her legs trembling just slightly in his grasp, her hair a cascade of ruby waving tendrils, falling around her shoulders. As each movement of the couple escalated and dove and rose up again to a brand new zenith, Lily shuttered to think she had ever been afraid of this. Of him.

Before her skin had time to cool, her body was wrapped up in his arms, his lips finding hers again. Lily sucked in his sweetened bottom lip and whimpered a little appraisal from the back of her throat. Her sentimental hands cupped his face, kissing him again as though it were her last chance. Their bodies felt like one as he held her. Buttons were parting ways with their button holes. The buckle of a belt was clanking loosely as she looked down between their bodies. Severus' chest was newly bare as his shirt fell away, and a scar that ran across his chest was just catching her attention. What had caused it, she didn't know, but it fueled her curiosity and her fingers traced up the white raised line. Lily knew better than to ask at a time like this, and put a pin in that thought as her hands glided over his shoulders, down his arms.

She tried not to think about the mark as her touch trickled over it. She didn't even look at it, only into his eyes for the split second they were in view. His face tucked back into her hair as he spread his love down her neck again. Wanting his adoration to be enough to cover up the thoughts that were slowly seeping back into her mind, wasn't sufficient. A lump formed in her throat and she tried to swallow it away quickly before reality grasped hold of her. They were going to have to hide. They were already hiding! What if this was about James and erasing that mistake? She didn't want to sleep with him just to make up for sleeping with someone else.

"Se..Severus..." His name got choked in her chest, not barely making it off her tongue. Her eyes clinched shut just as the first wave of tears spilled out of her lids, dripping softly on his shoulder. Her quiet weeping grew into soft sobs and her fingers gripped his shoulders for security more than out of want for him. There went her mind, ruining everything again.

Lily was the Fountain of Life, baptizing his sins as he drowned in her honeyed waters. Reciprocal of her sublimity, he offered her up transcendence. The waves crested and crashed, and Severus reclaimed his place at her mouth. She tugged at his lip with hers. His hands were moving; fingers speeding down his shirt to leave his skin bare to her touch – a caress that sent shivers through him. He moved eagerly against her, inflamed by her heat. He was ready to take her, when she whispered his name.

He knew immediately that something was wrong. Panting, his lips hovered a breath above her neck. A whimper broke free of her throat. He did not understand. Blood pounded in his head, making it impossible to think. There was a fire in him that still needed release. His whole body throbbed and ached for hers. "Lily," he purred, trying to coax her back to him. His hands caressed her. He pressed in closer, but she seized him by the shoulders and held him back from what he so desperately sought. "Lily." Sev's voice was no longer soft. He was sick with desire. He wished that she would come to her senses. Why was she crying? Why was she stopping him... didn't she want this too? His confusion stirred up anger; his blood too hot to cool.

Grudgingly, he raised his head to look at her. His face was flushed and fevered; his eyes were two black holes sucking her in, willing her to let him have his way. He wiped the tears from her cheeks, gently but with a touch that made it all too clear that he did not intend to be denied. "It's okay... It's okay," he placated. "I'm here. It's just me..." Unless that – he – was the whole problem. Abruptly his mind went black. He stepped back from her, his hand falling away from her face. Severus suddenly felt very cold without his shirt. The March air seemed to attack his skin. He shivered, and this time not from pleasure. Sev willed himself not to withdraw further; he forced himself not to panic, but the only conclusion he could draw was that she did not want him after all. No, he argued with himself, unwilling to believe that he repulsed her. She had responded to his advances and relished in his actions. He moved closer to her again, taking her hands in his and hugging them to his chest. "What is it?"

Try as he might, his coaxing wouldn't convince her to forget so easily this time. His voice speaking her name soothed her momentarily, even when it grew harsh. The eyes that gazed back up at him were like a scared child. The flesh of her cheeks rolled out taught under the pressure of his touch, then snapped back into place once the tears were eradicated. His voice once more felt like ointment to a burn, calming her litle by little. The heat from their passion had left her struggling to keep her thoughts from jumbling all together, but when he moved away and left her with a shiver, Lily wished for that warmth to muddle her again.

Her heart lept a few times toward her throat, never once coming back to her chest for a down beat. A look of panic and fear streaked across her face in less than a second. She couldn't let him pull away. She'd just gotten him. This was a mistake. Why did she cry? She was fine. Lily forced a smile through her tears as she begged her thin legs to stop from wobbling and move toward him. All she had to do was kiss him again. That would solve it. Shame on her for making him doubt her. That had to be what he was thinking. No no no. This wasn't right at all. Just as she was about to pray he didn't leave, his hands found hers and the water works threatened to erupt again.

"You...I'm sorry. I... I can't. I'm so... stupid." Admitting her faults wasn't exactly a forte of Lily's but Severus knew her better than anyone else. He'd seen sides of her she wasn't even willing to share with her sister. "I'm so....frightened, Severus. And I know you're going to have to hide me and that's not fair. I just want to be with you. And I want this, but I feel disgusting! I don't want this... to be about fixing our sins. My sin. I want it to be about us. When we're out of the prying eyes of the whole school. I want it to be just you and me, and right now it's not. It's everyone and everything, and I can't help but think you're going to be taken away from me." It sounded so feebleminded saying it outloud. All she wanted to do was spend an eternity in his arms. "Tell me it's going to be okay again. Tell me you know what to do. Please. I need you."

His insecure heart prickled and with the frustration still pent up in his body, he could not help but take her first words completely the wrong way. She couldn't? She was stupid? The conclusions he drew from the unspoken ends of her sentences were all things that made his insides go cold. He imagined the worst; that she considered this all a mistake. That the idea of being with him fully, in every way, had opened her eyes to some terrible realization that would take her from him. A very long time seemed to pass before he discovered the errors of his assumptions, but once he heard her continue, all the coldness in him vanished instantly.

Sev pressed her hands to his heart, and for a moment he was too overcome to speak. He felt the last of his delirious fire snuff out with the raw truth of her fears. Their passion of moments before might have been years ago. It seemed incredulous to think of what he had just done, when there was so much darkness standing in their way. He had seen only his burning desire, but now he remembered what had spurred his hedonistic lust. He had wanted to ignore exactly the things Lily was bringing up. Her thoughts, it seemed, were less single-minded than his had been. Frightened and hesitant as she was, she dared face the reality that he had hoped to avoid, for a while longer, in the pursuit of pleasure. A last, pent-up sigh escaped his lips. He knew that she was right – they could not run from the hard truths.

"Your sin?" he honed in on that, her action which had caused him such grievous hurt. "I... can't fully forgive what you did. I don't think I can ever begin to forget it. But I believe that I – no, we can move past it. How can I blame you for that, when what I did was so much worse?" It cost him a great deal to speak candidly. He realized that he was actually using some of the techniques he had learned for Occlumency to shut down those feelings which threatened to overwhelm him with guilt, anger, and greater pain. It was the only way he could speak so openly, without losing his temper or his nerve, but it was taking a lot out of him to maintain. He felt drained, as well as denied his release.

"It's because of me that we can't... that we have to hide the way we feel." His steady resolve was starting to break down. He reached out and ran a hand through her hair, admiring how it shone like ruby in the early-spring sun. A bitter-sweet observation. "It's my fault that I won't be able kiss your lips whenever I need them... that I can't even be seen near you... Lily, I have broken my own heart."

Sev choked back the emotion rising in his throat. He had to be her rock in this tumultuous ocean. Looking into her eyes, he found the strength he needed. "Even if I turn against them, we will still have to hide... But I won't rest until they're brought down, so that we can be together. I won't let them win." He pulled her into a warm embrace. "Just promise you'll stay with me, no matter what happens. Even if we have to keep our love a secret, even if we can't truly be together, promise not to leave me... As long as I have you, I can overcome whatever lies ahead."

The ache in her heart burned deep knowing he would never forgive her of her mistake. Moving past it was all she could hope for. They'd both made their beds with their choices. This was where they would have to rest their heads. He was right. Lily could try to forgive him of this, though it stung like a knife in her chest when she thought about why he did it. But forgetting that he had betrayed her like that would be hard with the truth of it pressing down on them like an unyeilding weight. She could see that he was trying hard to keep composure as he spoke and her silence offered him the time to say what he had to say. Turning her head into his palm, she closed her eyes for a second, savoring his touch. She'd never felt more whole than when he was caressing her skin.

Flitting her eyes open again, Lily focused back on his obsidian eyes. They were endless. She found herself being sucked into him, pulled by her heartstrings like a marionette. As he condemned himself for their need for isolation, her hands snaked up to his jaw, cupping his face gently. It was all she could muster in the way of comforting him. Her eyes followed every line in his face, every movement he he made with his lips, every emotion that leaked through his breaking placidity.

His arms drew her close again, his skin on her cheek and under her palms, was cool, yet felt like bathing in sunlight. Lily pressed her lips to his collar bone as he spoke to her. Her eyes blinked, quickly expelling her tears. If they were going to defeat this darkness that had taken control of them, they would have to do it together. "I won't leave you, Severus. I promise. We'll find a way. Stolen minutes. What ever it takes, Sev. I'm yours. You have me."

She sniffed against his skin and swallowed the hard lump in her chest, burying all her fear and insecurity deep into her depths. He was being strong now, but he would need her. And for him, she had to be a titan, steady and unwavering. She had to be brave, like the lion inside her. "We won't let them take this from us. You're my Severus. Not theirs."

His heart melted at Lily's words like snow basking in the winter sun. Her Severus he was and would always be. In body, in mind, in heart, in soul he belonged to her alone. He was the prisoner who feared naught but liberation, and he vowed that neither devil, man nor god would pry him from her. Not death nor degradation could sunder them apart. She was that immortal spark within his chest that gave him breath; she was his very life. Without her he was but a walking corpse, the wandering ghost; it was only now he lived. Sev held her close against him. He shut his eyes, resting his cheek on her head and allowing the scent of her hair to permeate his lungs. The world outside was silent and still, the world within was only her.

"Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove."

His voice was a soft, gentle breeze. He felt nearer to her in this moment than his words could convey. She was willing to stand by him through the worst thing he had ever done; she was prepared to fight to keep him by her side. He would not be alone. She was his beacon in the stormy sea, his lifeboat against the thrashing waves. He moved so that he could gaze down into her sublime, bewitching eyes. Onyx and emerald tethered with devotion. "Not one day has passed, since I first looked on your face, that I did not think of you. I have loved you all my life. I'll go to my grave still loving you, but if you love me back, I think that I shall never truly die. I will spend the rest of my days proving myself worthy of you."

She knew the sonnet well, hearing his voice lilt over it lightened her heart tremendously. His breath so close to her face dried up all her tears and she was a calm waveless ocean once again. The feeling she had before of bursting at her seams and falling apart entirely, was now such a foreign concept to her. How could she feel like that while he was there, holding her in his protective arms? With a smile, she turned her lips to his ear.

"O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken."

As he pulled back, she was smiling, all traces of sadness cast from her face. Idle hands were hers as they traced over his jaw and down to his collar bone. Looking up to him, she could hear her heart beating in her chest. "Then I'll keep loving you, and you shall be immortal." Lily leaned up, begging for another kiss, and then took it from him, for it was hers. With her lips held to his, she almost forgot the school around them existed. That was, until the bell rang.

The chime echoed through the school, startling her away from Severus again. Her time table for the day ran through her mind. She had history next and if she didn't make it to that class on time Professor Adams was going to mark her grade down again. "I have to go. I don't want to but I have to." From her chest came a soft laughter, as she kissed him once more, addicted to his taste. Rising up on her toes, Lily rubbed the tip of her nose on his. "I have an idea. Meet me tomorrow night. Fourth floor corridor. Down the back way towards the Ancient Runes classroom. I have prefect duty after curfew." The smile she gave him was eager as looked over her shoulder, the bell tolling it's last low gong. Pulling away she flattened her skirt down in the back and stepped reluctantly back toward the courtyard. With one last glance she smiled again, taking a picture of him in her mind. "I love you." And with that, she was gone around the corner.
