"I'm afraid I'm too close to wands to see the similarity with brooms," he admitted. "But I hear good things about Matchsticks. I wonder... The shopkeeper's life doesn't seem like it will hold you for long. I could certainly use a charming and clever witch like yourself on my staff, but I suspect the work would bore you. Ah, begging your pardon. It's just that you have shown, shall we say, a certain spirit of adventure simply by being here tonight. Working for someone else, even a friend, won't be more than temporary, I'd wager."
He had noticed the reluctance on her part, but he did not draw verbal attention to it. Young people were frequently uncertain of their future. Of course, he had never experienced that. From the very beginning, he knew that he would be going into the family business and had desired nothing else. Few people were so fortunate to be placed upon their path from birth. Ollivander had no wish to make Nix feel uncomfortable by dwelling on a topic that concerned her. Or was he mistaken? Considering her reaction more closely, he began to doubt it was her prospects that were disheartening. He thought back to the time she had purchased her wand. She had not been accompanied by her parents, as he recalled. Perhaps it was the past, and not the future, which dampened her spirits. Thinking of what she was going to do, might have only reminded her of that which she lacked. He could not be sure.
"Well, I'm sure you'll figure it out. Someone as daring as you isn't going to settle for less. Now, I think I've earned the right to ask what brought you out this evening. If you aren't meeting anyone for a tryst, why take the risk to be here?" His eyes sparkled with amusement. He had always been a sucker for intrigue.
