"SHUT UP! SHUT UP! You... Don't you DARE talk about her! You – you –" There was no insult hurtful enough to throw back at Potter. Nothing Snape could say to wound him as grievously as the pain James inflicted upon him. Every callous word that slithered from his disgusting mouth was an ice-cold dagger in Severus' lungs. He could feel his eyes stinging with tears, but his face had contorted into something inhuman with rage. His lips were twitching over his bared teeth. He shook so furiously that he could not keep his wand steady. The Blacks twisted the knives deeper in his chest; Sirius with his heavy-handed bluntness, and Bellatrix with venom. Her touch made his skin crawl, and he smacked her hand away.
"Shut your mouth, you harpy," he spat back. It felt good to vent his anger on her, where the pain was less raw. It helped to alleviate his hysteria; allowed him to regain some control over himself. As he glared into her acid eyes, his voice became a low hiss. "What do you think you're doing with him? It's not even seconds you're settling for – or have you always been a whore, Bellatrix? Maybe that's why Potter's taken such an interest. One more notch for his belt. That's all you'll be, so why defend him? Don't you realize he's the enemy of us both!"
If Snape had taken the time to stop and contemplate the truth of his own words, he would have been more suspicious of her. Surely Bellatrix – if anyone in this school – was on the side of the Dark Lord. James had always hated the Dark Arts with relentless persecution (which had been one of the reasons Severus was a favorite target of his violence), but Bellatrix was as Dark as her last name. The two ought to have been adversaries. Instead, it felt as though the whole world had turned upside down. It was not the his housemate who stood with him against the inseparable Gryffindor duo. In fact, it was looking like it would be Sirius who was inexplicably allied with him against the two unlikely lovers. Everything had gone completely mad. Snape, however, was not allowed the time for real reflection. He momentarily lost focus on the enemy, and Potter pounced on his distraction.
One swift kick, and Severus was down, at James' mercy. The next moment he was on fire, screaming as flames ate through his shirt and searing blisters erupted over his skin. He quickly smothered them out with what was left of his robes. Piece by piece, his whole body was taking a beating. Bellatrix's knockback jinx, Black's fist, Potter's flames; if they teamed up three-against-one – none of it mattered. They could pummel him within an inch of his life, but as long as he was conscious, Severus would keep coming after James again and again. Wordlessly from the floor, he sent a Flipendo of his own up at Potter and Bellatrix, and used the opportunity to clamber back to his feet. He would not have targeted Bellatrix at all, if not for her repulsively close proximity to Potter, but so be it. If that was the side she had chosen, he would owed her no loyalties.
